Sand Creek Trail Description

The Sand Creek Trail cuts a diagonal path along the creek through commercial and residential areas of southeastern Colorado Springs.

The  first segment trail begins its 5-mile journey north at El-Pomar Youth Sports Park. A trail spur by the Sierra High School west of Academy Boulevard also offers an important connection to the YMCA/Southeast Family Center. El-Pomar Park is also a starting point for the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail.

On its northern end, the trail runs through Wildflower Park, which surrounds Wildflower Elementary School and offers athletic fields, a picnic pavilion and a playground. Another trail spur branches from the park to the Sand Creek Elementary School.

A separate northern segment follows Sand Creek for 3.9 miles between Woodmen Road and Barnes Road.

Future plans call for thfe trail to continue north along Sand Creek to Black Forest, for a total trail length of 15 miles.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking is available in Wildflower Park (980 Nolte Drive W.).

Sand Creek Trail Reviews

Homeless, dirt patches, run down, and more

The trail is nice from its Northern starting point near Sand Creek Elementary to Chelton road. The next patch after this is paved to a barrier erected by the homeless leading directly into a homeless camp all the way to the Hancock Expressway. You have to skate/ride through the camp. After that, the path becomes a mix of unkept dirt patches and homeless people past the jail to the sports park and connection with the Front Range Trail.

As a skater, I had a better time on the Front Range Trail/Pikes Peak Regional Greenway (South/North at the park). That part is dirt and requires the large wheels of a tri-skate.

As with all Colorado Springs trails, you will be dissapointed. 0/5 for 90 % 5/5 for 1/4 of a mile.

New Section Open from the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail

A new section of this trail has been completed and is open from the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail (adjacent to El Pomar Sports Complex) northeast to Hancock Expressway. This is a brand-new, all-concrete section of trail up to Hancock Expressway.

There is still a short missing section of trail north of Hancock, but you can navigate around the missing section of trail using Astrozon Boulevard (located 850 feet to the southeast along Hancock). There are striped bike lanes on Astrozon between Hancock and Academy. You can jump back on the trail via the sidewalks along Academy Boulevard between the Astrozon/Academy intersection and the Sand Creek bridge just to the north. The trail continues along Sand Creek up to Airport Road.

Ride my bike here often

Enjoy this trail, and wish it were longer. It is supposed to be extended south to the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail in the summer of 2016. Will make a good trail even better.

It runs along Sand Creek and is clean and pretty. It is sidewalk most of the way, except for part of the northern end.

I enjoy this trail

I take this trail most evenings, it nice and peaceful

did not like it!

Runs next to the creek, looks like a dump site! Dogs everywhere afraid that they were going to jump out!
