Southern Glades Trail Description

The Southern Glades Trail lies on the outskirts of the city of Florida City, on Florida's southeastern tip, and along the eastern border of Everglades National Park. For 13 miles, it follows the C-111 canal; on its northern end, the trail parallels the west side of the canal, but switches to the eastern side of the canal for its southern half.

The trail runs through a quiet, state-owned wildlife area down to Manatee Bay. Along the way, you're likely to spot deer, alligators, snakes, and many kinds of birds. The pathway has a rough gravel surface, so mountain bikes or hybrids are recommended. Horses are also allowed. Note that you won't find restrooms or water along the way, so come prepared for your journey.

Southern Glades Trail Reviews

gravel fun minus the horseflies.

Did the entire trail this past Saturday (10/17) and it all went pretty well. Didn’t see much wildlife unfortunately. However do wear long pants and sleeves as the horse fly’s were all over us. Made for some frustration.

Trail is open

Definitely want to be on the west side of canal. That will take you down to Manatee Bay.

trail closed?

Not sure if this trail is closed but we tried locating on both ends by 9336 and by manatee bay no luck

Trail is on the WEST SIDE of the Canal!

We parked at the indicated location, and started down the gravel path/trail. It was only after we had gone about a mile or two that we realized we were on the WRONG SIDE of the canal! We retraced our steps, crossed over the canal at the gate (had to squeeze through, since it was not open), and THEN saw the sign for the trail, near the fence on the EVERGLADES side of the canal.
The trail on this side is much easier to ride, less gravel, smoother, and there are geocaches on this side... which was the clue to us that we had started on the wrong side the first time!

Needs A Facelift

The trail would be great if it wasn't for the gravel. The trail is obviously a canal access road meant for trucks. The gravel tears up tires and makes for the bumpiest ride in South Florida. You don't need to pave a trail, but the gravel definitely needs to be removed.
