Sterling Multi-Activity Recreational Trail (SMART Pathway) Description

The Sterling Multi-Activity Recreational Trail starts at one end at the edge of the Hoover Park parking lot and heads into a scenic wooded trail crossing a wooden bridge over Woodlawn Creek and traveling into Sinnissippi Park. The trail continues through the tree-lined park along the Sinnissippi Bayou and eventually passes Redfield Park before eventually reaching the Dillon Home Museum and Martin's Landing just under the railroad passage. Martin's Landing offers a beautiful view of the Rock River in both directions. You can connect to the Hennepin Feeder Canal on the other side of the Rock River simply by using the Sinnissippi Dam Walkway. The Sterling Multi-Activity Recreational Trail also connects to the  Hennepin Canal Parkway, which offers the opportunity to enjoy over 100 more miles of trail.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking is available at several locations along the trail. The trailhead at Hoover Park has a limited number of spaces. There is also a large parking lot at the far east end of Sinnissippi Park and the trail is handicap accessible from both of these lots. The Dillon Home Museum also offers some parking in its brick-lined lot to the west of the building. All of these areas can be easily accessed from IL Rt. 2 (3rd Street) in Sterling. The Dillon Home will be found at the intersection of Broadway and 3rd Street. Sinnissippi Park can be accessed by turning south at the Freeport Rd off of IL Rt. 2 and then turning right on Sinnissippi Park Road into the park. Hoover Park can be found by turning onto Woodlawn Road (at the McDonald's) and traveling about a mile to the Park on your right side.
