Sturgis Centennial Bike Path Description

The Sturgis Centennial Bike Path runs a little over four miles across the northern edge of the city of Sturgis, loosely following the route of the Bear Butte Creek. While the western portion of the trail is not very scenic, the trail's eastern end features some nice wooded areas, and the path overall serves as a very useful means of traversing the city.

To the west, the path begins alongside Boulder Canyon Road, and follows the road through a commercial area that hosts many of the city's hotels and chain restaurants. Crossing under the interstate, the path turns north along 14th Street past the O'Reilly Auto Parts, and continues east through the city's charming Centennial Park. The path crosses over the creek via 7th Street, and picks up again on the north side following Woodland Drive. This section of the trail is somewhat quieter and more relaxing than the others, as the trail continues east along the creek through several city parks and a more wooded landscape. Eventually the trail begins to follow the busy State Route 34, taking users past the large VA hospital and out to Brown High School, where the trail ends.

An important community asset for students heading out to the school or residents looking to visit the local parks, the Sturgis Centennial Bike Path offers a great deal of utility and, despite frequently functioning as a sidepath on major roads, a surprising amount of beauty for those with the patience.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking may be available at the western end of the trail in the commercial lot with the Holiday Inn and Subway, and at the eastern end at the high school; make sure to follow any posted signs and regulations. Parking is also available midway through the trail via the City Municipal Park off of Blanche Street.

To reach the western trailhead from the direction of Rapid City, take I-90 north towards Sturgis, and take exit 30. Turn left onto Lazelle Street, and proceed across the railroad tracks past the Days Inn. The trailhead will be on the right side, just off the road on Adair Avenue.
