Print Friendly MapIowa City's Sycamore Greenway Trail is a paved trail running alongside the Sycamore Greenway, a stormwater management system comprising a series of cells planted with native flowers and grasses, which allow runoff from nearby neighborhoods to infiltrate into the soil to help prevent flooding of area creeks and rivers.
Near the south end of the trail can be found the South Sycamore Bottoms, a wetlands made up of several water-filled basins that is known as a local birding hotspot. Summer brings dickcissels, common yellowthroat, red-winged blackbirds, and many other prairie species. A family of Sandhill Cranes makes their home near the Sycamore Bottoms and their raucous calls can often be heard from a distance. The paved trail does not extend around the wetlands, though there are dirt paths.
There is generally parking available at the Sycamore Apartments near the south end of the Greenway; at Kickers Soccer Park, when the park is open (4400 Soccer Park Road), and at Grant Wood Elementary (1930 Lakeside Drive) outside school hours.
