Tri-Community Greenway Description

The Tri-Community Greenway follows the route of the Boston and Lowell Railroad and its Stoneham Branch, originally built to serve Stoneham’s shoe factories and provide passenger service. The trail begins at Wedgemere station, which serves a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) commuter rail line.

In the first section, the trail travels between an active railroad and a park along the Aberjona River. In Winchester Center, the trail continues along the river, passing by stores and ponds. A spur route to Horn Pond intersects the trail near Spruce Street. After Spruce Street, there is a gap where you must bike on residential streets for about half a mile. The trail resumes at Irving Street and continues to follow the Aberjona River, passing through forests. After crossing into Woburn, there is another gap.

The trail follows the Stoneham Branch railroad corridor starting at Central and Grape Streets in Woburn. It crosses under I-93 using a tunnel, then enters Stoneham. The trail circles around the center of Stoneham, providing access to many stores and parks. The Tri-Community Greenway ends at Gould Street, across the street from Recreation Park.

Parking and Trail Access

You can access the trail via the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) commuter rail service; the trail begins at Wedgemere Station (25 Mystic Valley Pkwy., Winchester) on the Lowell Line. If driving, parking is also available at the station.

At the north end of the trail, parking is available in a lot on Pleasant St. between Spring St. and William St. in Stoneham. There is also parking at Pomeworth Field (12 Calthea St., Stoneham).

fun ride

Great local trail. Well done and maintained. Only negative is the number of road crossings. If you are looking for a quick close to home trail this is a good trail.

A good trail if you are in the area.

If you are in the area and don't want to drive it's a good option. A bit too many road crossing.

Good (sub)urban trail, lots of busy road crossings

Just rode the entire length of this path for the first time yesterday. It's a nice little trail, though rather fragmented. It includes a few on-road stretches but those roads are very quiet and safe. It's a fun, practical way to get from town to town. There are no long, unbroken stretches, which limits its uses. From the 93 tunnel to rt 28, it's a long uphill grade but not too steep.

There are a lot of busy road crossings. They were less busy yesterday because we're in the middle of a pandemic, but I suspect they will be a lot worse once traffic gets back to normal. Only a few have crossing lights, but I suspect more will (should) be added.

I particularly like the one mile spur that goes from Winchester to Horn Pond. There are lots of additional paths around the pond, although a few are more suitable for mountain bikes.

Another great feature is that the Winchester (Wedgemere) end of the path is only a short (less than three miles) on-road ride from the Minuteman trail.
