Trolley Line Trail (IA) Description

Built on the same route that a streetcar once used to carry passengers to the impressive overlooks of Eagle Point Park, the half-mile long Trolley Line Trail provides a convenient and scenic means of accessing the park. The trail runs through a densely wooded landscape, ascending up towards the limestone bluffs that allow for gorgeous views of the Mississippi River right above the historic lock and dam that spans the section below. The southern end of the trail begins at the Mathias Ham Historic Site, a stately Victorian era manor that offers guided tours exploring the history of the Dubuque area and what life was like in the bygone steamboat era. The northern end of the trail brings you into Eagle Point Park, a 164-acre site that offers a whole host of outdoor recreational activities like picnicking and tennis, as well as incredible views of the mighty river from a series of lookout towers and observation areas. The Trolley Line Trail is a perfect connection between two great family destinations, popular with locals and visitors alike.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking is available at the Mathias Ham Historic Site, located on Shiras Avenue just past the intersection with Lincoln Avenue. The site is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the Memorial Day to Labor Day season. Parking and restrooms are also available at Eagle Point Park; cyclists and pedestrians can get in for free, and motor vehicles are charged a $1 entrance fee (waived with the purchase of a ticket at the Mathias Ham Historic Site). The main entrance to the park is located on Southern Gate Road, off of Shiras Avenue. Park hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. (11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays) from the first Saturday in May to the fourth Sunday in October.
