The trail follows a flood control canal or wash, that extends from the Flamingo Detention Basin to the Tropicana Detention Basin, hence its name. The asphalt trail features two segments adjacent to the wash, with a 1.3 mile connector route in-between.
The trail begins on Hacienda Avenue across from the high-end Spanish Trail golf-course community, and heads east along the edge of the Flamingo Detention Basin, Crossing S. Buffalo Drive, the trail continues onto Tenaya Way, heading south on the sidepath along that street until a short off-street portion is encountered just north of Dewey Drive. This trail segment emerges onto Timber Creek Street, where the connector portion of the trail begins. Just follow the signs posted to keep on the trail route: head south along Timberlake and then turn left onto Russell Road, following it until it meets Rainbow Boulevard. Cross Rainbow Boulevard at the crosswalk and then head north to Dewey Road. Turn right onto Dewey and proceed on the sidewalk up to Redwood Drive, across from which the canal is visible again. At that point, you will be done with the connector portion and back on the Tropicana Flamingo Wash Trail.
From there the trail continues east along the channel, crossing Torrey Pines Drive, Jones Boulevard and Lindell Street before coming to its conclusion Russell & Edmond Street. Although the wash continues to the Tropicana Detention Basin, this is the end of the road for the trail. The trip from one end of the trail to the other, and back, totals over 8 miles. Additionally, from the west end on Hacienda Drive, there's a 1.5-mile connection to the I-215 West Beltway Trail.
