Print Friendly MapA visit to Tuscaloosa would not be complete without experiencing its Riverwalk. Only a couple of miles from downtown, the riverwalk consists of a wide, two-lane paved pathway along the south bank of the Black Warrior River, extending from Capitol Park to Manderson Landing, just north of the University of Alabama campus. Along the path are lots of places inviting visitors to linger, to play and to relax. The trail threads through beautifully landscaped parks, while offering offers picturesque views of the water. There are picnic tables, benches and gazebos provided at different points. On the west end, the M&O Railroad Bridge dominates the sight line; it's a wooden and steel truss bridge over a century old that is still in use to this day. Visitors can catch an outdoor concert at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater, browse the summertime farmer's market, or grab a meal at one of the riverfront restaurants. The trail is lit at night, the perfect location for a breezy nighttime walk along the water. Bikes are also available for rental.
The trail is a huge draw to all types of visitors, from families to the students and staff of the university. The Tuscaloosa Riverwalk is also a dog-friendly trail. Given its popularity, it's no surprise that there are plans underway to expand the trail in both directions.
On the opposite bank of the Black Warrior River is Northport's Richard L. Platt Memorial Levee Trail. That trail is not quite as scenic, but it is less busy and in a less built-up area for trail users who would prefer to take the trail less traveled.

The first portion of this trail is closed down for construction. Once you get past the sports complex, however, the rest of the trail is beautiful, diverse, with places to stop and eat at a restaurant along the Black Warrior River, enjoy a picnic, or just rest and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
