The Upper Falls Greenway is a short rail-trail that cuts through the charming village of Newton Upper Falls in Newton, Massachusetts. The trail occupies the same former rail corridor as the developing Bay Colony Rail Trail farther southwest and the Medfield Rail Trail, and long-term plans call for the eventual extension of the Upper Falls Greenway over the Charles River to meet that trail in Needham.
For now, the Upper Falls Greenway provides a pleasant place for a walk or bike ride, with benches and kiosks lining the trail's brief route. At the current southern end, an overlook provides a scenic view of the Charles River. Farther north, a restored train station at Oak Street is home to a charming coffee shop where bike racks accommodate trail users, while a short spur along South Meadow Brook provides direct access to additional retail destinations along Needham Street.
The Upper Falls Greenway can be accessed from Easy Street, Elliot Street, Needham Street and Oak Street in Newton Upper Falls. Limited on-street parking is available on Chestnut Street adjacent to the Depot Coffee Shoppe. Be sure to obey any posted parking restrictions.
This is a shaded trail that parallels Highland Ave. You can begin/park at NTB/National Lumber and follow it south towards Oak Street. Along the way, occasionally there are art installations. At Oak Street, there is an adjacent bocci court and picnic tables. You can continue there for a very short bit on the trail towards the tv tower/Charles, but my recommendation would be to make a left onto Oak Street and head towards Highland Ave. Once there, if you make a right, you’ll see two DCR marble posts starting an unnamed trail that will take you along the Charles to Second Ave. if you follow Second Ave a couple of blocks, it will take you right towards Cutler Park. You can bike the length of the Futker Park loop around the lake, which often has swans. It’s a pretty extension to the Greenway Path and for almost the entire ride, you are in a path A pretty ride, I recommend it
