Uptown Spur Trail Description

Martinsville's Uptown Spur Trail, as its name implies, runs along an abandoned railroad spur line. Like the trains before its conversion, the paved trail branches off from the former main line—now the 4.5-mile Dick & Willie Passage Rail Trail—to whisk travelers to just north of Martinsville’s charming downtown.

A concrete trestle over busy Commonwealth Boulevard/State Route 457 offers a safe crossing just before the trail's northern terminus off Franklin Street. On that site, a former textile factory has been converted into the Clocktower at Commonwealth Centre, an office and warehouse complex. The spur line on which the trail was built once provided rail service to the facility, which was originally a tobacco factory and later a cotton mill.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking for the Uptown Spur Trail is available at a landscaped trailhead on Depot Street in the heart of Martinsville. Restrooms are available.
