Print Friendly MapThe Warrenton Branch Greenway follows a segment of the former Warrenton Branch Spur railroad, running between downtown Warrenton (at S. 4th Street) and Meetze Road. The Warrenton Branch was constructed between 1851 and 1852. To learn about the railroad's history, you can tour the inside of the historical caboose at the western trailhead; the caboose is open seasonally on the first Saturday of every month from April to October.
The route is beautiful and lush with trees and flowering bushes in the spring and summer. Through the trees you'll have glimpses of the surrounding residential neighborhoods. There are a couple of well-marked road crossings on low-volume roads and the trail goes over the busy Eastern Bypass (US 17) on bike/pedestrian bridge.
Future plans include building an amphitheater at the depot end of the trail, which would use a railroad flat car for a stage.
Parking is available on the west end of the trail at the depot off 4th Street in downtown Warrenton and near the east end of the trail at Castle Kingston Lane, adjacent to the Eastern Bypass.
The Warrenton Branch Greenway is a beautiful little connector trail. On a Tuesday morning, we saw folks out biking, jogging, and walking their dogs. During our early May visit, the trail was shady and green with lots of flowering bushes alongside. At the downtown Warrenton trailhead, we were also greeted by a little red caboose, which was cool to see. There were a couple of street crossings on quiet residential roads, but they were well marked and the drivers were courteous and happy to stop and let us cross.
This beautiful trail has been expanded from 1.5 miles to almost 3 full miles. The latest section is gravel and somewhat rough--- but a nice addition to the originals original asphalt. Well worth the ride!

A nice easy walk. Well maintained- great for strollers, bikes, wheel chairs, etc.
We just happened to drop by Warrenton one day and had the dog with us. This was a great place to walk a dog...lots of shaded areas and beautiful paved walkway. Very peaceful and lots of friendly people!
rode this on 7\27\13 was a wonderful ride although not very long. wife and kids enjoyed very much, covered most of the way, and only a couple of stops at roads or access points. not a lot of traffic, mostly walkers. will continue to ride whenever possible.
This trail starts at an old renovated caboose and travels for a mile an a half- a perfect distance for kids who are learning how to ride bikes or young walkers. Old railroad signs have been placed along the trail and an old railroad turntable was uncovered during construction.
