Williston Rail-Trail Description

The Williston Rail-Trail runs between East Main Street and West Main Street in the small Barnwell County community of Williston. The paved trail serves as a safe route to school for students in the area, as it ends in the east across from Williston-Elko Middle School and Williston-Elko High School. The path is lined with decorative lights along its entire length.

The trail occupies a small portion of a 136-mile corridor once used by the South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company. Spanning the state from Charleston to Hamburg, the line was initially financially successful as it carried cotton to markets in South Carolina's oldest city. The railroad is famous as the home of the Best Friend of Charleston locomotive, the first steam-powered train built entirely in the United State to offer regular passenger service.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking for the Williston Rail-Trail is available off Main Street in downtown Williston, across from the post office.
