John Brownell Trail (Beltline Trail) Description

The John Brownell Trail, also known as the Beltline Trail, runs for nearly 2.75 miles through residential neighborhoods on an abandoned rail corridor in Grand Island, Nebraska. The trail provides direct access to the city's Pier Park, which is home to a number of recreational amenities, such as tennis courts, baseball fields, and Pier Lake. At its western endpoint, the trail links with the St. Joe Trail, connecting many of Grand Island's residents with Bellevue University/Central Community College, the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer, and George Clayton Hall County Park.

The trail is named for John Brownell, who built support for the city to acquire and convert the railroad into a recreational trail when BNSF Railway abandoned it in the late 1990s.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking is available at Suck's Lake Park near the John Brownell Trail's midpoint. The two large parking lots are accessible via W. Oklahoma Avenue. Entrances to Pier Park's parking lots near the northern trailhead are at Bismarck Road and S. Oak Street.
