Bitterroot Trail

Bike path next to Highway 93

September, 2024 by keizer96

Really badly maintained and noisy trail. You're better off riding the actual shoulders of 93, far less hilly and definitly no weird bumpy patches every 2 feet.

Bitterroot Trail

Some views. Mostly Hwy noise.

Too close to a chaotic 4 lane high volume Hwy. Too noisy. Not actually near the Bitterroot River. Go to the Rio Grande Trail in Colorado to see how a river path should be constructed.

Bitterroot Trail

Just south of Lolo, you can ride the frontage road to the west, old 93, and it's incredibly quiet, calm and little traffic for several miles . A good reprieve from the traffic noise. Beautiful ride.

Bitterroot Trail

noisy

We looked forward to riding this trail for the views. It was very disappointing, the noise from riding next to the highway was too much for us. The trail is also quite bumpy. We started in Lolo and planned to go to Victor but turned around after 10 miles.

Bitterroot Trail

We rode to Lola from Missoula before getting rained out. Trail is nice, pavement in good condition and has some variety. Like other reviews, we found the traffic right next to the trail ruined the ride. Can't imagine riding 51miles with the noise.

Bitterroot Trail

not a fan

August, 2021 by jeanette.saltzman

We rode ten miles north from Hamilton. Trail goes along a noisy highway, through ugly industrial/commercial areas. The trail is paved, wide and flat. They are the only positives I can see. Maybe the rest of the trail is better- don’t bother with the southern end. We went west on side roads on the way back. So much nicer.

Bitterroot Trail

Heads out of town for long ride

July, 2021 by acewickwire

Nice trail following along the active rail tracks for the first couple miles. I started at mile 0 and went for about 3.5 miles, just a short distance past the Bitterroot River crossing (TrailLink map doesn’t show this as continuous but it is). At this point the trail is getting out of town. There are a number of street crossings and since it was early Sunday morning not a lot of traffic. Some of the crossings have signals. Drivers stopped when they saw a bike coming without having to activate signals. Trail is wide and nicely paved.

Bitterroot Trail

Fairly flat with great views

June, 2018 by sando1532

This is a wonderful, ride with many options for eating, exploring, camping, fishing and lodging along the way. With all due respect to one of the reviewers, the elevation gain over 50 miles from Missoula to Hamilton is roughly 400 ft NOT 4000+. The trail does parallel US Hwy 93 the entire length and is noisy but the views are gorgeous the entire length. A short, fun option is to ride Missoula to Lolo with a stop at the Lolo Brewery for good food and beverage.

Bitterroot Trail

Rode this path June 5, 2017. Nice ride!

Rode this bike path from 3rd Street in Missoula to its terminal end south
of Hamilton, at the bridge over the Bitterroot River, out and back, with a couple of short side trips, total ride was 104.8 miles.

Bitterroot Trail

Nice trail, but noisy

May, 2017 by gjswitek

Rode from Missoula to Florence and back. The adjacent highway is heavily traveled and quite noisy. In Missoula the trail puts you onto local streets and is not well marked. It's easy to get lost. Local drivers have been very courteous in giving the right of way, and the trip back to Missoula is easier riding than to Florence. Traveler's Rest State Park at Lolo is a nice diversion and resting point, and Glen's Café in Florence serves very good pie.

Bitterroot Trail

Bitterroot ride

We started in Missoula and found that not all of the trail to Lolo is complete. It was a great ride all the way to Hamilton and back and plan on doing it again. One bad thing to report is that some of the bridge approaches have sunk below the bridge decks. About thirty miles from Missoula on the way back I destroyed my wheel because of the problem

Bitterroot Trail

Fun Trail

I ride the bitterroot path on my Tour Easy Easy Racer LE. I park at Anglers roost where the path starts at the south end of the Bitterroot valley just soith of Hamilton.Unload my bike and enjoy a nice smooth ride from Anglers roost headed north toward Hamilton.About 2 miles up the path "All asphalt" you can stop at Murdochs Farm supply and look around then continue on towards Hamilton
When you get to Hamilton the path ends but you have sidewalks or you can veer off and work your way around town on nice treed back streets. If you stay on the sidewalk on the south end of town you can stop in at Valley Bike and Ski and look around.Lots of shops and restaurants on main street. You can head north up main street "no path" to the Bitteroot river or keep going north on 93 and cross the Bitterroot again and go all the way to LoLo if you like! Its along 93 all the way bit there is plenty of beautiful scenery
Specially on my recumbent!
