South Omaha Trail

Updates March 19 2017

March, 2017 by vfurlong

1. This trail now connects to the Field Club trail near 35th and Vinton Streets near the many grain silos.
2. There is now a trailhead at 42nd and D Sts. with parking. This is directly across the street from the McDonald's at 42nd/D.
3. I walked it today, but bikers prevail in numbers. The lack of significant scenery seems to fit the bike mode.
4. At the western end of this trail near the Keystone connection, I have seen a flock of turkeys in a forested area with is part of a Kiewit storage site. ( that was 18 months or so ago)
5. Long hills on the eastern half of the trail...

Steamboat Trace Trail

Pretty but windy

February, 2017 by blairmcian

I previously reviewed this trail from a ride from its southern end, at Brownville, to Peru, NE. This review is of the leg from Peru to just south of Nebraska City. It is an attractive stretch of trail, and the trail itself was generally in good shape. The only negative that keeps me from giving more stars is that much of the trail is exposed to whatever wind may be blowing, and in Nebraska the wind is usually blowing. If it turns out to be a headwind then that is a serious negative. That would be significantly reduced if some windbreaks were planted alongside the trail, especially on the west side since that's where the wind usually comes from.

Springfield to Platte River Pedestrian bridge

February, 2017 by dpschmidt93

Nice trail, some nice shaded/wooden areas. Very scenic around the Louisville to Platte River bridge area. Trail was very good shape. Some parts the gravel/rock was a little heavy to pedal through, but overall very well maintained. No washouts or washboard sections.

Wabash Trace Nature Trail

idyllic

September, 2016 by ericdolson

Love this trail. Period. Have enjoyed many a bike ride and long run on the Wabash Trace Trail. Awe-inspiring sunrises, countless deer and Autumn/Winter scenes to rival the best cinematography Hollywood has to offer... have been some of the top reasons I believe this is the best trail in the Greater Omaha/Council Bluffs area. It always feels a little like I'm going back in time when I run this trail; back to a quieter, simpler era. I marvel at the glory of God's creation with every step I take on the Wabash Trace Trail. Whether you enjoy a short hike, a long run or a 100-mile bike ride, you won't be disappointed with this trail!

Keystone Trail

Great scenic ride

September, 2016 by jrobey747

The trail is smooth, unless it has rained a lot, some parts of the trail gets covered up with mud. Few inclines on this trail, so its a great trail for beginning riders. My favorite part is riding south into Bellevue and looping around Offutt AFB watching the Doomsday plane fly over. Lots of farm fields and beautiful natural Nebraska to enjoy along the way too!

Wabash Trace Nature Trail

great trail experience

August, 2016 by kcwyks

we're over 60 years old and were looking for a long ride challenge. We completed a 2-day round trip from Shenandoah MP at 362 to Council Bluffs at MP 407 and back, with a motel stay at the Western Inn in Council Bluffs, the closest motel to the trailhead there.

We parked our car near the Depot in Shenandoah, and and began the 44 mile trip on our road bikes on a mild summer day. Stopped for lunch at one of the 2 restaurants in Malvern, about the halfway point for us. The hills are gentle and most of the route is in shade. The trail condition was great- compacted crushed limestone with only a few soft spots and the bridge surfaces and bridge approaches are good. It took us about 5.5 hours of riding each way.

Be sure to purchase the trail pass at the Depot to help pay for maintenance and get a trail map - there's a lot of history displayed in the Depot. As you will see, there are a lot of bridges they must maintain on the trail.

In Council Bluffs to get to Western Inn, its about 1.5 miles from trailhead. Continue on the trail along the high school, cross Harry Langdon Blvd and take the paved path on the campus of Iowa School for the Deaf to the left, it curves around to the right (northeast) near the intersection with highway 92, but you end up at the corner of Valley View and 92. Then you cross 92 and you are on the Valley View bike trail. Go about 3/4 mile to Madison Ave, go left (the sidewalk is on the north side of Madison), and the motel will be on your right after about 200 yards.

Services along this route are limited; in Imogene there is a bar/grill and the town has provided a small camping area with bathroom right next to the trail. Malvern has a grocery store, pharmacy, 2 restaurants. Silver City has a shelter, a bar and a small store that stocks snacks and spare bike tubes right by the trail. Mineola has a restaurant.

From about mile 401 to 404 there is a long grade down into the Missouri river valley at Council Bluffs. This was a well-earned opportunity to coast a while and get some muscle relief. And coming back, we attacked the hill while we were fresh the next morning.

The portion of the trail closest to CB is the busiest, but we went miles without seeing anyone else on the most remote stretches.

There is a way to connect with the trail along the Missouri river levee, and eventually with the Bob Kerry pedestrian bridge over the MO river (which really is worth seeing) into Omaha but we did not figure out how to make the connection as we were too tired. We'll do that on another trip.

Fantastic Trail

July, 2016 by jxudo

I recently descovered the trail out of wanting to find a nice walking spot.
The trail is beautiful and peaceful.
Over half the trail is surrounded by forest like locations.
It'll get you to a lot of convieniant places throughout the city.
Awesome place for walking long distances.
I highly reccomend.

Iowa Riverfront Trail

Not the best for walking

July, 2016 by happyinmykitchen

We took the trail from Big Lake Park and went South just past Ameristar Casino (6 miles) and then turned around and headed back to the park.
While some areas were quite scenic with views of the Omaha skyline and Bob Kerrey bridge, other areas didn't offer much more than a view of the interstate.
While biking on roads traveled by cars as well may not be much of an issue, walking those same areas was a bit uncomfortable.
A trail map at Big Lake Park would have been helpful as we were not 100% sure which way to head out of the park to follow the trail. A paved portion of the trail does not begin until after passing under a low rail road bridge.
