Slippery Elm Trail

enjoyed rural ride

February, 2017 by motophoto

The Montessori school does not allow parking weekdays while school is in session. Drive to wal-Mart to park. Trail is only 1/4 mi from parking lot. Pleasant paved path. Trail ends in North Baltimore and has men's and women's restrooms along with places to sit. Many benches along entire route. Mile markers also.

Wayne County Metroparks Trail

This trail has it all

February, 2017 by olyolson

I ride this trail every week 26 miles round trip.It has 3 big hills that take me right down into low gears.Really good work out.Lots of smaller hills. You only cross two roads from north end to nature center at south end and very little traffic on those roads.Very scenic with wildlife everywhere.I often see herds of deer in the Willow section(as many as 30 in a group)Never a boring ride.Road bikes to (Rollerblades with biggest wheels possible)will enjoy this trail.Connector trail at I275 near Huron River bridge can then get you on the I275 bike trail then will connect to Hines park trail and other trails.Try this trail, you will be surprised.

Great Trail

January, 2017 by mommyoatneal

My son and I use this trail when I come home to see my mom in Ottawa Hills. Perfect for a brisk walk any time of the year. The residents/walkers/joggers/bikers are very courteous of one another. Anyone living along this trail are really blessed to have it.

Hines Park Trail/Rouge River Greenway

Nice trail for a straight forward distance ride

November, 2016 by dje.ellsworth

I rode this entire trail round trip starting at the very nice parking lot on Michigan ave. For most of the trail you can choose to ride on Hines Drive which about half the bikers were doing. I went north on the trail to northville where I stopped for a bowl of soup and returned on Hines Drive.

The surface is mostly quite good and generally flat. At the Northville end I finished on the road rather than the trail to 7 mile road simply because I wanted the variation of a significant climb.

The only confusing place is at the University. Stay on the trail there and don't be tempted to do the road. There's a place where there is a little roundabout circle and it's not obvious which trail to take. Coming from South turn left going downhill into the forest. Obviously coming from north to south turn right at the top of the rise.

Also watch out for the detour away from Hines Drive at the Northville end although either trail or road you end up nearby on 7 mile.

Finally note that after a rain (like my ride) there are a number of significant spots where the trail is under water. But it's easy to bike around through the grass.

I hit one bad pothole on a bridge near Merriman road. I never saw it since it was covered by leaves at it almost threw me off my bike.

As someone said it's a pretty URBAN trail with nice parks to the side all along the ride. The turnoff to the 275 trail is well marked. My 4 rating is because it's very nice but not outstanding and I got tired of traffic noise. Hines Drive is a well traveled road. I do recommend doing this trail. Stop at Nankin Mills interpretive center if you have time and do a loop around Northville. They have a little rebuilt block similar to Greenfield village though very small. It's worth the visit.

Towpath Trail

Non-Stop Thoroughfare!

October, 2016 by twotandemfamily

You can ride this trail non-stop for miles and miles with no stop signs. (There are a couple yield signs to warn of a private driveways to property between the old canal and the river.)That was really fun to be able to just keep riding and riding.

The trail is marked every quarter mile, with several places to rest or observe nature on park benches. Map displays are also frequent, with a convenient "you are here" arrow. There are nice restrooms at both ends of the trail, with a latrine in the middle of the trail at Bend View. There is a trail bypass to go around the park building at Bend View, if you don't want to slow down.

The trail was dry and very hard today, and we observed several folks on road bikes with skinny racing tires, although they may have had to use caution over a couple springtime washouts repaired with larger gravel.

Border-to-Border Trail

Not your average rail to trail ride.

October, 2016 by bpatch

Started our ride at Bandemer Park. Easy to find parking lot and many spaces. Outhouse style toilets but in permanent structure. Trail a little hard to follow once outside the park. You have to really look for "border to border" signs. Nice ride through Michigan University and then on to Eastern Michigan University. Not your typical flat rail to trail ride. Some larger hills, (not too bad) and quite a few crossing of 4 lane roads. We road to Ypsilanti and turned around at main intersection as we were unsure where the trail led next. Nice ride especially if you're looking for something different than a ride through the woods.

I-275 Metro Trail

Generally well-kept trail

October, 2016 by vortex58

This trail is very smooth asphalt from S. Huron Road (exit 11 on I275) up through where it merges with the Hines Drive road and trail (aprox. 20 miles). There are two railroad crossings that were not improved. One is just south of where I94 crosses I275, the trail goes under a railroad tressel, it narrows and the asphalt is old and bumpy. The other place is where the trail crosses Van Born Road (south of US12), I 275 overpasses Van Born and there is a wash where water from the freeway erodes down the embankment and sediment spreads across the trail after a heavy rain on the north side of Van Born. From there the trail is like a concrete sidewalk, with a chain-link fence on the east side, the trail ascends to overpass a railroad. The whole overpass is like the sidewalk and the concrete plates are shifting and breaking up somewhat, there are no "pot holes" as yet. This overpass represents the largest hill on most of the trail except a steep hill where the trail drops down into Hines Park area. I enjoy this trail very much overall.

Towpath Trail

Make a day of it

October, 2016 by unclewilbert

I've lived in the area for many years but rode the trail for the first time last weekend. I was on a recumbent with fat tires and the conditions were dry. It was wonderful! Only the center section was a little 'rough' - even when muddy, it would be trivial on a mountain bike.

I started at Farnsworth Park and headed south. There are many photo ops and a couple of rest stops with benches and rest rooms along the way. At the southern terminus in Providence Park you can tour the mill or take a ride on a mule-drawn canal boat through one of the original locks on the Miami Erie canal. The trail (unofficially) continues south about a half a mile to Providence dam where there is a shelter house, a playground and, yet another, scenic view. The whole thing is just dripping with history.

If this 18/20 mile round trip is not enough, you can do the 30 mile loop on the fully paved Wabash Cannonball Trail located virtually right around the corner.

University/Parks Trail

A well maintained and safe trail

September, 2016 by purejoyriding

I ride this trail often taking the link to it out of Wildwoods metropark. It is a great trail with nice surroundings despite being in a well populated area. This is a trail that can be enjoyed as a leisurely ride or can be taken at a fair rate of speed and effort to enhance the cardio effect. This trail is a real gem in the Metroparks and University of Toledo fold. Most folks you meet on this trail are friendly and smiling which just makes it more fun to ride.

Wayne County Metroparks Trail

A new link enjoyed

September, 2016 by purejoyriding

I rode this set of trails again yesterday after researching more about a trail through Flat Rock, Michigan out to Lake Erie. I started this time at the Flat Rock community center right off I-75 at the Ford plant exit. From there i rode west on the Flat Rock community trail along Gibralter road to Huroc Park. From there i rode the link trail to Oakwoods, Willow, and Lower Huron metroparks and then returned to the Community Center. Then i rode south from there and gradually southeast on a nice connector trail to Lake Erie Metropark and through the park to trail end at Lake Erie. This was a wonderful ride with a mix of scenery, nature, and some minor traffic and noise areas but those did not diminish the enjoyment of these interconnected trails. The only real rough spots were on the connector through Flat Rock along Gibralter road. Parking is plentiful at all trailhead connectors and the community center itself is a real gem. With some small exploratory side jaunts i took this was a total ride of 51 miles and nice to do on the first day of fall. Colors are changing in the trees.

North Coast Inland Trail - Sandusky/Ottawa County (Bellevue to Elmore)

Very nice, our home trail

September, 2016 by purejoyriding

I often ride this trail from Elmore to Fremont and back. When riding this section i recommend stopping in Lindsey at Sandi's Village Cafe for their great coffee and they have great food and pastry items also. The staff is very small town friendly and will assure your stop is enjoyable. This section of the trail runs through wonderful countryside and deer can often be spotted. I did ride the streets of Fremont once to connect to the Fremont East section but would not do so again as it is a bit too dangerous for me. The trail east from Fremont is also a nice ride and both sections of this trail are generally well maintained. There is a wonderful bike shop in Elmore (Elmore Cycle and Fitness) and the folks are very helpful with any bike or travel issues and are avid bikers themselves. As is often the case on trails there is a nice ice cream shop (I Scream) next door also. A nice safe trail.
