Sandy Creek Trail (PA)

A short and fun trip

November, 2022 by crableg300

In late October, my brother and myself rode a small section of this trail starting at the Belmar Bridge as a part of riding the Allegheny River Trail (ART). We had parked at the Franklin trail head - The Belmar Bridge is 5.1 miles south of this trail head. There are steps you can walk your bike up to get to it from the ART. The Belmar Bridge is over 1300 feet in length. The views of the river and region below were well worth it. My brother took a video that made for nice memory going over the bridge. Our trip was only from the Belmar Bridge thru the Mays Mill Tunnel. We had crossed multiple smaller bridges that carried you over the Sandy Creek on our way to the tunnel. The views were beautiful and with the autumn season, the colors added to a nice time and more picture taken.

Allegheny River Trail

Beauty and Variety makes for a Fun Trip

November, 2022 by crableg300

Late in October, my brother and myself rode the trail starting from the Franklin trail head thru the Kennerdell tunnel. The trip was around 15 plus miles (30+ total). The trailhead at Franklin is where the Samuel Justus Trail begins as well from its southern point. The Allegheny River was next to us for the entire trip and the scenery was beautiful. With the Fall colors, picture taking was an often occurrence. Shortly into the trip, an information board will tell the story of the assassin John Wilkes Booth as an Oil Man. 5 miles into the ride, the Belmar 'trestle' Bridge will appear. The bridge is over 1300 feet in length and is a part of the Sandy Creek Trail. There are some steps you can walk your bike up to get to it. Would encourage to do this as it is amazing to cross the bridge and see the view of the river and the area. The next item of interest was the Indian God Rock. A rock with Indian carvings that was used as a landmark for the earlier steamboats. We were cautioned to avoid getting close to it as the area around it is slick. Our end point for the trip was the Kennerdell Tunnel. It is 3350 feet in length and was constructed in the time range of 1913-1915. You definitely need a light to ride thru it, and like the Belmar Bridge, is something special to check out. Our ride was mostly on asphalt; however a few miles before the tunnel there was about a 3/4 mile section where you will ride on gravel as the trail was re-routed. The entire trip was enjoyable as there was plenty to see.

Like a long slow roller coaster ride

Like a long slow roller coaster ride

WOW!!!…no boring flat straight rail trail here….this trail has it all:

- curves….and more curves
- varying grades….typical easy RR grade but some felt like maybe 3% to me…see the elevation pic…I wonder if there is even a flat spot?
- Tunnels…3 of them!
- Viaducts
- A short section of trail-with-rail
- Spur trails
- A connection to the Panhandle Trail
- Lots of shade
- Historical signs….lots of them….with wonderful pictures…nice to learn some history and get out of the saddle for a few minutes…THANK YOU!
- A campsite at Boggs
- And even a SuperFund Cleanup Site near the end in Coraopolis
- And best of all, it looks like a crew of volunteers that are always working on the trail surface

A great ride through varying terrain and scenery and learned some history along the way. Can’t ask for much more than that. Thank you…bikin-Mike…Sep 2022

Allegheny River Trail

Emlenton end, November 2022

November, 2022 by vicki1960

Early November we parked in Emlenton, mile marker 97 and biked to Sunnyslope at mile marker 110. We went through the two tunnels, Rockland and Kennerdell. Bring a light! Round trip and ride this day was 27 miles.

Panhandle Trail

Hadn't ridden the panhandle in about 5 yrs. It is in much better condition than it was last time. WV has what looks to be very new blacktop. Good trail, without heavy traffic.

Panhandle Trail

I haven't been on this trail in about 5 yrs. It is much improved since then. WV now has pavement . Not all the way but within a few miles of Weirton.PA/ Allegheny County still gravel but in nice condition.

Western Reserve Greenway

First ride on the WRG

November, 2022 by engdahl_tl

We rode three miles south of 87 until we came to a detour, then backtracked and went two miles north of 87. The trail is wide enough for two trikes side-by-side, and the part we rode is mostly smooth with very little slope. The marsh just south of Dunkerton Rd is a nice stop.

Though the trail map shows restrooms at the trailheads, there wasn't one at the Lockwood parking lot (at 87). Other bikers said there are none anywhere.

Little Beaver Creek Greenway Trail

Fall Ride

November, 2022 by vicki1960

We parked in Lisbon at mile 0 and biked up to Leetonia, mile 10. Once in Leetonia follow the signs through town and re-connect the trail which runs into Washingtonville at mile 12.5. A nice warm Fall day to enjoy the pretty leaves.

Pymatuning State Park Spillway Trail

Short and sweet!

November, 2022 by vicki1960

Nicely updated trail! The former section of cinder and dirt has been grated and paved. Total length is now 3.2 miles. We parked at the Spillway and fed the fish. Trail goes 2.2 miles North into Linesville, passing the fish hatchery. The new bridge over a creek has been installed. After the ride on the new section, we traveled South 1 mile to Fries Road. That section pavement is only a year old. Nice trail within Pymatuning state park.

John C. Oliver Multi-Purpose Loop Trail

Fall 2022

Mid to end of October, leaves and foliage was at full peak providing plenty of yellows and golds. Some reds thrown in there as well. Always an enjoyable ride while encircling Lake Wilhelm within the park.

Ohio to Erie Trail

Enjoy Ohio on a bike...

October, 2022 by 7s5a692x35

Overview:
• If you are a gravel enthusiast, you will be very disappointed as the OTET is 92% either paved or concrete.
• I would not attempt to experience the OTET without GPS guidance {bike computer or 3rd party software on a smartphone {i.e. Ride with GPS} or you will experience navigation set backs on your adventure.
• Areas that are crushed limestone/chert have a sparse covering and could be messy after a rain as there was plenty of exposed hard packed dirt due to a lack of limestone/chert covering.

Cleveland to Massillon 5 October 2022 ~ 70 miles
• Trails Experienced:
o Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail

• Beautiful views of the Cayuga river and Canal tow path with some locks in remarkable condition.
• Detour at the city limits of Massillon and as we arrived at end of the workday and the transition through was met with heavy traffic. You will need to make the downtown transition to rejoin the OTET on the Southside of Massillon.
Massillon to Mount Vernon 6 October 2022 ~ 80 miles
• Trails Experienced:
o Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail
o Sippo Valley Trail (10 Mile)
o Holmes County Trail (23 Mile)
o Kokosing Gap Trail (13.5 Mile)

• Expect rural road riding (20+ mile) through Mennonite/Amish communities from Dalton to Fredericksburg. This transition was well marked at every turn and you can see an example in the photo section for this trail.

Mount Vernon to Columbus 7 October 2022 ~ 52 miles
• Trails Experienced:
o Heart of Ohio Trail (17 Mile)
o Alum Creek Trail (25.2 Mile)

Columbus to Xenia 8 October 2022 ~ 60 miles
• Trails Experienced:
o Camp Chase Trail (15.9 Miles)
o Robert’s Pass Trail (6.5 Miles)
o Prairie Grass Trail (29.2 Miles

Xenia to Cincinnati 9 October 2022 ~ 70 miles
• Trails Experienced:
o Little Miami Scenic Trail (78.1 Miles)
o Armleder-Lunken Connector Trail (1.0 mile)
o Lunken Bike Path (5.0 Miles)
o Ohio River Trail (7.6 Miles)

• There is a detour on the Little Miami Scenic Trail halfway to Cincinnati near Kings Mill Bike Trail Access. After talking to some local runners on the Trail, they highly recommend not taking the detour due to road safety for cyclists. You can safely and easily make it through the detour and once you make it to the construction area with the buildings, head to the Cartridge Brewery and on the backside of it you can rejoin the trail.
