Stavich Bicycle Trail

nice trail for the most part. Pennsylvania side well maintained; however Ohio side VERY rough, at least at first. very bumpy and actually difficult to ride through. once through that part rest of trail very nice.

Headwaters Trail

a nice trail with interesting history signs

September, 2017 by aparrott58

we are visitors from Montana looking for rail trails since we have very few in our area. this was a nice trail with minimal grades and abundant shade. the logging that was occurring adjacent to the trail was not a problem. there was unknown scat on the trail that could havebeen a bear... we did find it difficult to find the trailhead in Mantua and ended up parking behind Mcdonald's. the signage in town was too small and not obvious.

Garrett Wonders Bike Trail

Garrett Wonders Trail, Warren, OH

September, 2017 by mamon

This is a generally pleasant, though not spectacular, well-paved, flat ride through the city of Warren, Ohio. Contrary to the map shown here, as of today (9/15/2017) it is a continuous, unbroken bike route between the indicated end points. At least, this is what one would conclude from the green bicycle signs all along the route. The total length is about 4.5 mi. The northern portion of the trail goes through woods and meadows, then it goes into an urban area. Several portions of the ride are on city streets with little or no traffic. There are a few major street crossings. Some of the ride is past old factories, many of which appear to be unused or underused. This gives a sad feeling of economic decline. I just read in another review dated 10/2013 that some of the neighborhoods I rode through were unsafe. While it is true that I did not see any wealthy neighborhoods, I saw no reason to feel unsafe. But the incident the reviewer cites gives one pause. The Garret Wonders Trails connects with the Western Reserve Greenway at N River Rd NW, just east of its intersection with Sferra Ave. NW. The WRG is much nicer rural trail, equally well-paved and flat and much longer.

Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail

Pleasant trail for hiking/jogging but not for a road bike (with thin tires)

September, 2017 by uresh.kuruhuri

I did a ride over a weekend on my road bike from Lock 39 trailhead towards south about 8 miles (and back). Most of the route is limestone and gravel but hard and few patches are asphalt (but they are very rough). On a sunny/dry day, you could expect some amount of dust on your bike by the end of the ride. To me on my bike it is an ok ok ride. However, a mountain bike or a hybrid bike with wide tires would be better suitable.

On the other hand, it is a very good trail for a hike, walking and jogging. The better side is, it is a bit scenic trail for walk/jog. The cuyahoga river runs through the trail and is beautiful to look at all the greenery. I am sure it would be pretty beautiful around fall season.

Maple Highlands Trail

Middle Section, and some South.

September, 2017 by jsfarley75

I jumped on at Maple Highlands Trail and headed south on my hybrid bike. One of the first things you see is a very well detailed map kiosk, and a convenient bike repair station. Getting on the trail you'll notice very nice pavement. Center painted line. Mile markers painted on the ground, as well as statement on the ground reminding about courteous passing. This section of trail is well kept, and modern looking. From the multiple benches, to the wooden fencing along some of the edges of the trail. All were in quite good shape. Dog walkers are apparently responsible about cleaning up after their pets as well. No landmines to dodge. The scenery is not awesome, but good. Lots of woods and shade. Some cool covered bridges. Map kiosks at nearly every intersection that I recall. Some road crossings, but nothing major. Very peaceful ride. Very good condition and presented well.
I get to the transition just south of Headwaters Park, and it's a whole different scene. The nice paved path gives way to dirt, rocks, mud, and horse ploppies. I continue on as my bike is equipped to handle some offroad terrain. I also wasn't ready to turn back and wanted to see how this turns out. The rough terrain lasted quite a bit. And when I say rough, it's pretty rough. Not like crushed hard packed gravel on most non paved trails. Forget about it if you have a road bike or don't have suspension. Multi-Use Path takes a new meaning when a horse and buggy shares the path. I saw 4 and was only on that section for less than an hour. My turnaround point was reaching downtown Middlefield as there was no clear direction on where to proceed. Kinda glad, because I was tired of the terrible path conditions. Headed back up the bumpy dirt road. I don't regret exploring that section, but I won't ever do it again. If they ever pave it (or a least better gravel), make better connectors, and better signage, I'll come back. Even if it's still shared with the horses. I could tolerate dealing with the ploppies if other aspects are tended to. Kinda strange that there's signs to clean up after your pets, yet horse piles are ok. Either way, I realize it's Amish country, and can absolutely tolerate the issue and respect them and their turf.
I didn't attempt the Northern section, as by the time I got back near my Car, I was tired from the offroading in the south.
Loved the Central, though it's a bit too short for me to return to just for that. This trail was about 45 minutes from me, and I have better options closer by. However, I'll pay attention to this trail's future. If everything eventually became properly connected and the south improved, I'd definitely revisit.

Samuel Justus Recreation Trail

Nice trail

August, 2017 by jlchimile

Flat, mostly shaded. River views. Picnic table, benches, and educational boards along the way. Didn't look at the map close enough - only went to the water treatment plant and not all the way into Oil City. Parking available off 322 and Bredinsburger Rd. And at the water treatment plant.

Panhandle Trail

additional paving a great improvement

August, 2017 by taeubanks

I recently rode from the Harmon Creek starting point in Weirton, WV to just east of Oakdale, PA, a 50 mile round trip. The trail is crushed limestone for just under 4 miles from Weirton to the Pennsylvania state line, where Washington County has recently competed blacktopping their section of the trail. There were a few muddy ruts on the unpaved West Virginia section but nothing terrible. The new blacktop was welcome, as it is a slight uphill grade for the first 10 miles towards Burghettstown, PA. The paving continues the length of the Washington County section, a distance of 17.5 miles. The trail continues east towards Walkers Mill as crushed limestone, but in much better condition than the West Virginia side, which seems likely to continue deteriorating unless Hancock County takes some pride in its section.

It was a beautiful day and a beautiful ride. I plan to do it more often now that it has additional paving.

Maple Highlands Trail

it got me riding again

Great path that starts at Big Creek Park in Chardon. The paved path currently ends at Headwaters Park in Huntsburg. The rest of the path is hard packed dirt, gravel and limestone and is rutted up by buggy tracks. I am told completion trail (through Middlefield, Parkman and ending at Swine Creek Reservation) will make the entire paved trail 20 miles and is scheduled to be ready June 2018. Watch for deer, rabbits, ground hogs and other critters scurrying across the path. 4 covered bridges in the center section of the trail, with Mountain Road Cycle sitting in Chardon in case of repairs. Love this trail.

Allegheny River Trail

Emlenton to Kennerdell Tunnel

August, 2017 by crider71

I've been on this trail several times and it's probably one of my favorite places to ride my bike! Recently I started in Emlenton, rode to the Kennerdell Tunnel and back. It's best to take a light since there are two dark tunnels to go through. If you take your time you might be able the see some deer, geese, birds, or other wildlife along the way. There's also nice resting areas that offer great views of the Allegheny River.

Ernst Bike Trail

Nice trail but don't feel safe sending wife alone.

The trail is nice, but I would not send my wife out there alone. This would be a perfect trail for a predator to prey on a woman out alone. And to agree with the previous review.....an unexpecting unarmed woman. The sign stating no armed weapons is great for the law abiding people that respect the actual sign. However, not sure the people who are wanting to commit a crime would do so. The state allows my wife to carry, the county allows my wife to carry, the city allows my wife to carry. The state parks allow my wife to carry (ie...Woodcock). I think anyone who frequents Woodcock St Park have seen the creepy guys in the woods. We enjoy the trail and the nice scenery, but I give my advice to anyone wanting to protect themselves to find another area to bike where you can defend yourself properly. Unarmed people are weak to the criminals who are armed. It is just a matter of time -

As far as the trail itself, it is a great place to bike and hike.....and a nice facility.

Portage Hike and Bike Trail

Smooth. Chestnut Hill to Fairchild

First time on this trail, and it was sweet. Paved, wide, and mostly flat. This is a very easy trail. Follows the river and train tracks through mostly covered woodlands. Some industrial buildings here and there. A few road crossings that had little to no traffic were acceptable. My trip was about 14 round trip. There was a couple trail heads / parking areas that I passed. I like that I can get right into down town Kent as a destination. There's always something there that you can stop to check out while your rest your legs before heading back. Including Kent Cycle. I only wish there was a trail head at both endpoints, but I'm sure this trail will eventually expand. And I can't wait.
