County Line Trail (OH)

Wayne County's Railfan Hotspot

January, 2017 by railfan mario

Rails to Trails of Wayne County deserves to be commended for their decision to convert the old Erie Lackawanna right of way into a trail - it parallels the CSX ex-B&O mainline for much of its length between Creston and Rittman. Since I found the trail in late 2013, I have visited it many times and seen countless trains, but one really stands out. On August 8th, 2016, while I was sitting in my car at the Kauffman Avenue parking lot, a CSX freight went past me... with Norfolk Southern SD70ACe 1071 (Central of New Jersey heritage) trailing the leading CSX diesel! On two occasions, I spent an entire day in Sterling watching and recording trains on my Sony HandyCam. Over in Rittman, there is a restaurant in the old Erie depot at the east end of the trail. They serve good food, but they aren't open past 3pm (2pm on Saturday). If you're a railfan from Wayne or Medina County, I recommend that you visit this trail!

Ohio & Erie Canalway Towpath Trail

Massillon to Cleveland

December, 2016 by railbiker

I rode this section and completed the Northern most section of the Ohio to Erie Trail.

In Cleveland, the trail is mostly on busy city streets, coexisting with vehicles. Twice I tried to post the turn-by-turn pictures, but for some reason the Northern end pictures in Cleveland haven’t been accepted.

The trail was mostly scenic, until it entered Cleveland. Drew Carey might think Cleveland is the best thing since sliced bread, but the view from this trail had a lot of scrap yards, rock quarries, sewage plants, and vacant buildings with their windows broke out. In other words, a lot of urban decay. I don’t ever plan to go back.

The Ohio to Erie Trail was supposed to go to Lake Erie, the “Erie” in the name. But this trail does not actually end at Lake Erie; it ends about half a mile South on the North end of the Carter Road vertical lift bridge. I’m not going to risk riding on the busy streets of downtown Cleveland and end up like Andrew Gast-dead inside someone’s windshield. There are too many other safe trails that are not on public roadways.

Holmes County Trail

My First Trail!

October, 2016 by bridget44890

Seemed easy enough to ride especially for a first-timer, relatively flat, pretty scenery, lots of tree cover, and lots of horse poo to dodge (but it was no big deal). We did Fredericksburg to Millersburg and back.. Plan to return to finish the route to Killbuck.

Heart of Ohio Trail

Update on the trail

The trail now continues south from Centerburg towards Sunbury - I just checked and the paving looks like it was just finished.

Holmes County Trail

Great Trail

October, 2016 by jcmnbnet

My wife and I bicycled this trail from Millersburg to Fredericksburg (about 20 miles round trip). The trail is all asphalt and basically flat. It was an easy ride with lots of nice scenery. There are facilities at Millersburg, Holmesville and Fredrickburg, so you're never far from a rest room.

This trail is typically 16 feet wide, with half of the trail dedicated to buggies and the other half dedicated to pedestrians and bicyclists. Because of the buggy traffic, we encountered the casual pile of horse apples, but it was very infrequent and not a distraction.

We would recommend this trail to anyone.

Coshocton Three Rivers Bikeway

Great for walking, running, & cycling family fun.

October, 2016 by kennkiser

The trail surface is clean & smooth (roots under the incline near the SR83 tunnel, between the lake & canal boat, creating large surface humps). Volunteers keep the trail clean & beautifully landscaped. There's a slight change in surface levels (1-2 inches) on either end if the aquaduct bridge crossing the Walhonding River near the Lake Park Complex. The trail is relatively level, with 3 steep inclines. 2 located at the south end of the lake, & 1 at the northeast end. Benches are spaced along the trail, including a couple gazebos tucked in the trees. RESTROOMS are available in the Visitor Center in Roscoe Village and at Lake Park at the soccer fields, playground/picnic area, & campground. VENDING machines with beverages can be found at Lake Park in the playground/picnic area, the Monticello canal boat (along SR83). Roscoe Village has restaurants, groceries, ice cream, & alcohol. The Local Bounty store (north of US36 on SR83) is accessible from the far end of the soccer fields & features delicious foods made/grown locally. PARKING available at the Roscoe Village end of the trail, Lake Park, soccer fields, canal boat, & behind Local Bounty. BONUSES: Fishing, camping, waterslide park, Historical Roscoe Village (with tours), canal boat rides, softball & soccer fields, & plenty of space for picnics, outdoor games, & relaxing.

Ohio & Erie Canalway Towpath Trail

Perfect for the average rider

October, 2016 by cleary101

Members of our group ride quite a bit, but nothing too long except for Buckeye Breakaway (75 miles each way). We typically start in Independence and end in Peninsula, but decided to head South from our typical end point. What a great ride. Little change of pace, but less crowded and offered a few different elevations and road types. Got into the Valley area and stopped for lunch, got back on the path and kept heading toward the Akron trail head. Heading back appeared to be more downhill so it helped the less experienced riders. 25 miles in all and the trail was immaculate. Do yourself a favor and experience one of the best casual bike trails out there.

Mohican Valley Trail

Enjoyable trail and marvelous bridge

September, 2016 by purejoyriding

We rode this trail from Danville to the end where it connects to under development start of Holmes County Trail. This is a nice smooth trail with some pleasant hills and beautiful nature surroundings. Watch for frequent horse droppings. We actually parked at the Danville park by the football stadium and took a quiet village street 3 blocks to trail head. We had planned on return to Danville to pick up Kokosing trail, as trailhead is approximately 3 blocks south of park, and ride to Mount Vernon but rain rolled in so we called it a day. A very nice experience and Danville is a safe and friendly place. The Bridge of Dreams is as impressive as one would imagine.

T. J. Evans Trail

Beautiful trail, needs minor maintenance

September, 2016 by kennkiser

Great trail with beautiful scenery & plenty of shade. Smooth surface overall. Numerous access points. A few road crossings in Granville & many roads/driveways between Alexandria & Johnstown. Traffic on SR37 in Granville is very respectful about yielding to the crossing. The following are minor, but... Keep your eyes open for overgrowth along trail edges, large bumps from tree roots under pavement (mainly in Granville area), & 2-3 inch difference in surface elevation at bridges & some tunnels. Surface needs TLC & resealed (except between Granville & Alexandria). RESTROOMS: Playground near OSUN/COTC campuses, restaurants in Newark on Church Street, soccer fields east of Granville (take split in trail near cow pastures - ends at soccer fields), & playground at west side of Granville.

Heart of Ohio Trail

Beautiful trail

September, 2016 by geedub

We have ridden several times this year - it starts in Centerburg and goes to Mount Vernon - It is downhill from Centerburg to Bangs Ohio then it levels out - the uphill ride back will slow you down a bit.

Overall a very nice trail.

North Coast Inland Trail - Sandusky/Ottawa County (Bellevue to Elmore)

Very nice, our home trail

September, 2016 by purejoyriding

I often ride this trail from Elmore to Fremont and back. When riding this section i recommend stopping in Lindsey at Sandi's Village Cafe for their great coffee and they have great food and pastry items also. The staff is very small town friendly and will assure your stop is enjoyable. This section of the trail runs through wonderful countryside and deer can often be spotted. I did ride the streets of Fremont once to connect to the Fremont East section but would not do so again as it is a bit too dangerous for me. The trail east from Fremont is also a nice ride and both sections of this trail are generally well maintained. There is a wonderful bike shop in Elmore (Elmore Cycle and Fitness) and the folks are very helpful with any bike or travel issues and are avid bikers themselves. As is often the case on trails there is a nice ice cream shop (I Scream) next door also. A nice safe trail.
