The Great American Rail-Trail highlights some of the country’s most iconic landmarks, well-known geography and storied history across a 3,700-miles-plus route between Washington and Washington. Comprising approximately 130 existing host trails and approximately 1,700 miles of trails gaps, this multiuse trail, when complete, will be a national treasure, uniting millions of people over thousands of miles of trail across 12 states and the District of Columbia.
Picture yourself pedaling across the entire country on a safe, seamless and scenic pathway—or walking a local trail that connects along historic routes ... enjoying the experience of exploring America’s heritage, its potential, its beauty and bounty, its people and places from the most personal vantage point: the trail.
The Great American Rail-Trail™, a signature project of Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC), promises these experiences and more as it winds through the nation’s diverse landscapes, passing through the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Washington.
The trail, a long-held vision of RTC, will connect rail-trails, greenways and other multiuse paths, following a cross-country course like the one charted by the railroad more than a century ago. And like the railroad connected people across the nation in new ways, so will the “Great American,” introducing trail users to new American experiences as they meet the many small towns, unique landscapes, bustling urban centers, and historical and cultural treasures that are the fabric of American life.
While the completion of the developing trail will take years, it is already more than 52 percent complete and ready for exploration, carried by more than 1,900 miles of existing trails and approximately 1,700 miles yet to be completed between Washington, D.C. and Washington State.
Get to know these unique and impactful host trails that together make the Great American Rail-Trail a true national treasure.
The trail is accessible at trailheads for each of the Great American Rail-Trail trails. Find parking and trail access info through the records listed below.

wonderful trip across America
We rode this trail from Toulon to Princeville today. It was great! The path was very good. It is mostly shaded. Excellent. We stopped in Wyoming on our way back for lunch. Ate at 111 Coffee Shop. Don’t be fooled, this is NOT just a coffee shop. The lunch was delicious. And it is decorated all with bikes! Perfect for us bikers. And check out the bathroom. Cute!!! Can’t wait to do more of the route from Princeville going south.
This is the best trail I have ever ridden!
