Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers Monument

Prairie Grass Trail

Black History Military & War

A portrait of Colonel Charles Young.

The Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument honors the service of the Buffalo Soldiers—African American army regiments that mostly served in the U.S. West—and the life and accomplishments of Colonel Charles Young, who escaped slavery, became a Buffalo Soldier and was the first Black general in the United States Army. The monument is in Wilberforce, Ohio, where Young was stationed for a period in 1894. He ended up teaching Military Sciences and Tactics courses at Wilberforce University and making a lifelong friendship with fellow professor W.E.B. Du Bois. The house Young owned in Wilberforce is the site of the monument.
