Panhandle Trail McDonald Trail Station - History Center National Trail Day Pancake Breakfast. This was the second year my brother and myself enjoyed having breakfast and talking to the folks running the event. Inside, pictures of a local artist were on the walls.

Panhandle Trail McDonald Trail Station - History Center Inside the McDonald Trail Station / Museum, there is a lot history of the area. Here is a display of a derrick and detailed information of the oil exploration in the local area. These old pictures are always fun to look at.

Panhandle Trail Pavilion, seating, firepit, and cliffs pretty much end of trail in PA You can't miss the rocky cliff, pavilion, and built up seating area. A mile or so after this is a parking lot and the end of the trail.

Panhandle Trail Walking Bridge by Fossils Cliff/Neville's Woods Hiking Trail Close to the East end of the trail there is a parking lot and a connection to a couple hiking trails.

Panhandle Trail Panhandle Trail below McDonald Montour Trail Bridge I highly recommend taking the connection to the Montour trail to check out the spectacular view from this bridge.

Panhandle Trail PA nicely packed down gravel WV rough gravel, PA line asphalt for a few miles, then rest looks like the picture. (Check google maps dotted/verses solid green lines for bike paths) Small sections washed out but overall good condition.

Panhandle Trail WV Side rough section WV section (1st 4miles of trail) is not as packed down as a normal gravel trail. Road/Gravel bikes are ok but it will be VERY bumpy...... scenery is worth the bumps.

Panhandle Trail Wide open and beautiful The trail opens up into a wide area outside the town of Midway. Something about the scenery here (with the fences on each side), made for a good picture. Just some more variety which is always nice.

Panhandle Trail Classic PRR Bridge 35.09 Correcting my other shot of this bridge labeled as 34.9, this bridge is #35.09. These embossed railings still guard many bridges, platforms, and walkways all over the system, 46 years after the railroad lost its PRR identity to Penn Central.

Panhandle Trail Twin Steel Spans at 35.54 Twin curved, double-track steel girder bridges span Harmon's Creek at the east end of Colliers, each protected by classic Pennsylvania Railroad bridge railing.

Panhandle Trail Classic PRR Signal Bridge 38.8 One of many ubiquitous Pennsy signal bridges, this beauty spanned four tracks, and held the distant (approach) signals for 'WC' Interlocking two miles west, and for 'WC's remote 'CO' Interlocking at Mile 35.9 at Colliers to the east.

Panhandle Trail Dinsmore Trail Access Lot Looking down the big hill westward, down the former Pennsylvania Railroad triple-track mainline right-of-way, toward Weirton, WV, Steubenville, OH, and points west, toward Saint Louis, MO. Love the PRR keystone logos on the signs and mileposts!

Panhandle Trail Old Dinsmore Tunnel - #4 Before 1950, these two bikers would be eastbound, smack in the middle of the now by-passed Dinsmore Tunnel (#4), one of ten tunnels between Pittsburgh Union Station (Tunnel #1 - Today's Light Rail Tunnel) and Bowerston, Ohio (Tunnel #10), also daylighted.

Panhandle Trail Hanlin Station Platform Rail How long has it been since the last hand grasped this still sturdy westbound station platform subway railing at Hanlin, West Virginia... Maybe a passenger headed for Columbus, Cincinnati, Dayton, Indianapolis, or Saint Louis?

Panhandle Trail Passenger Subway - Hanlin Here was the westbound platform access stairway out of the Hanlin passenger station subway. Yellow-gold wall bricks were a PRR standard for these station subway walls. Probably 80 years since these steps were used.

Panhandle Trail Hanlin Platform & Repeater In this eastward view, we see the westbound passenger platform and the old tower-train radio repeater antenna at Hanlin, WV. The station pedestrian subways are still intact, many, many years after the last passenger train stopped here.
