Cinder Road River Trail (Gallinas River Walk) Description

The Cinder Road River Trail is a multipurpose trail along Gallinas Creek in Las Vegas, New Mexico. The Riverwalk snakes through downtown. Although the trail sits on the creek’s east bank, pretty pedestrian bridges connect folks from the other side of the waterway. The lower half of the trail within Gallinas River Park was built on a bed of a former railroad spur which carried timber, ice and passengers back and forth to Montezuma. In fact, the railroad was what sparked the growth of industry in Las Vegas, which started as an agricultural community along the creek. Years of industry left its mark on the river but there is interest in revitalizing and restoring it.

North of Mills Road, a newer segment of trail parallels Cinder Road and is well-marked asphalt with centerline striping. Here buildings thin out, replaced with fields and farmland. The trail conclusion at El Camino Road is marked by a trailhead with shelter and benches.

Parking and Trail Access

The trail is easiest to find where Bridge St. becomes National Ave. at the crossing of the Gallinas River. On-street parking and a small off-street trailhead parking lot are available at this location.
