Overview
The Commonwealth Greenway, also frequently known as the Commonwealth Avenue Carriageway, runs for 5.5 miles through the Boston suburbs of Newton.
The route follows the former Commonwealth Avenue Carriageway which for many years carried local traffic westbound along the carriage road, separated by a green median from the traffic of the busier two-way traffic of the adjacent road.
About the Route
This former carriage road now includes new paving, striping, and signage that informs drivers of the new eastbound bike traffic.
Along its 5.5-mile route, the trail passes a number of sites, starting at its western endpoint which leaves off from the Charles River Reservation. From here, this western section of the trail passes Norumbega Park and Lyons Park. As the trail continues east towards Newton, the trail passes by the Brae Burn Country Club and Newton Cemetery.
The eastern endpoint of the trail, which comes as the former carriage road merges back into the main thrum of the traffic of the highway, is located in Chestnut Hill, steps away from Boston College and Chestnut Hill Park.
The Commonwealth Greenway runs between 2401 Commonwealth Ave. (Auburndale) and 27 Commonwealth Ave. (Chestnut Hill), which both offer parking.

See TrailLink Map for detailed directions.
Follows the route of the Boston Marathon, including Heartbreak Hill. Very pleasant and easily accessible from Boston, Brookline and western suburbs. Most of the route is completely separated from cars on Commonwealth Ave. Lots of places to stop for refreshments and it's a short detour on Center St.'s restaurants.
