Overview
This portion of the North Country National Scenic Trail (Kathryn to Claussen) is a hiking-only rail-trail that generally follows Spring Creek between the city of Kathryn and the Clausen Springs Wildlife Management Area. Traveling through fields, farms and low scrub, the trail has a dirt, grass, ballast and crushed stone surface.
About the Route
The western end of the North Country National Scenic Trail (Kathryn to Claussen) is at the Clausen Springs Wildlife Management Area, which offers camping, parking, fishing docks, boat ramps, a swimming area and a playground. A highlight is the Clausen Spring Lake, where swimming, fishing and non-motorized boating is allowed. From the wildlife area, the trail follows a former railroad corridor east to 1st Avenue in Kathryn.
Please note that this rail-trail is only open to hiking and a vehicular entrance pass is required for North Dakota State Parks.
