Waverly Rail Trail Description

The Waverly Rail Trail is one of northeast Iowa's finest scenic bike and hike trails. Beginning on the west side of the Cedar River in Waverly, the trail heads southeast and crosses an awe-inspiring bridge over Cedar River through downtown. The trail passes through woodlands as it makes it way south and east, crossing 7 more bridges and offering scenic views of the surrounding farmland and woodlands.

The trail is part of the Rolling Prairie Tri-County Trail System, which consists of several open segments along an old railroad corridor, including the 15-mile Rolling Prairie Trail and the 5.5-mile Shell Rock River Trail, also known as the Butler County Nature Trail.

Two other sections of the trail system directly link with the Waverly Rail Trail at US 63: A short extension heads south to the town of Denver (2 miles) and the Readlyn Grump Trail runs east for 6 miles to the town of Readlyn.

When complete, the Rolling Prairie Tri-County Trail System will connect nine communities, three counties and two state parks along its 80-mile length.

Parking and Trail Access

Access the Waverly Rail Trail at 400 East Bremer Avenue, behind the Kwik Star convenience store.

Waverly Rail Trail Reviews

Picked this trail for an afternoon ride in August 2013 as we traveled from Wisconsin to Iowa, selecting our driving route to take advantage of attractive sounding trails. After riding some park trails on the west side of the river in Waverly, we crossed the old single lane bridge to the east side and found our way to the trail over some city streets to where access directly to the trail is available just a block south of Brenner Avenue and the original train depot. It would be helpful if the city would post signs directing to the new trailhead sign that was just being placed the day of our ride. Once on the trail, it proved to be an excellent ride surrounded by 100+ year old hardwoods near the river as we headed southeast.

"This is indeed a fine trail. Peddled it on my tadpole Tri-Cruiser on Aug 29, 2006. Started from East side of Cedar River with good parking. Great River Bridge and real Country Vistas."
