Milwaukee Road Rail-Trail (Thompson Park)

How to Access the Pipestone Terminus of the Milwaukee Road R2T

September, 2022 by frango58

Take Rt. 2 to Pipestone Pass. Around MP 75.5 (about 1/4 mile north of the Pipestone Pass parking area on Rt. 2), look for a locked gate that says "Closed to Traffic". Go around the gate and DOWN the path for about 300 yards (you will probably have to walk this). You will see an informational kiosk next to the abandoned RR tunnel. The R2T starts here.

Manhattan to the Gallatin River Trail

nice walking trail

I am not a super hiker and sometimes you just want a place close to home to walk. This trail fits the bill. You cross the river a few times on well Maintained bridges. If you park at the Belgrade access, there are restrooms. It can get a bit loud with road traffic - as it follows an ever busy road. Less than 2 miles from home, so we enjoy often. The entire trail down and back is just about 4 miles.

Headwaters Trail System

Disappointed

July, 2021 by joglazewski

For a trail with so much potential, this fell far short of expectations. Passes through beautiful scenery between a riverfront State Park, and cute little town.
Has not been given the attention it deserves. Asphalt surface cracked with painful gullies and erosions, NO signage. We rode back on a road with light traffic, but no shoulder and 70 mph speed limit to avoid having to ride this surface again.

Fun trail!

June, 2021 by kzod

This is such a fun trail! The trestle is HUGE the tunnels are LONG and cold even on a hot day. Definitely bring a light for the tunnels. We didn't the first time we did this and just pointed the bikes in the direction of the light at the end of the tunnel (probably not the smartest thing, but it was fine). Even in July we've encountered thick ice in the tunnels. Getting from the parking lot down to the trail is steep, but the rest of the trail has a very gentle grade.

Great ride today

We rode this trail from Toulon to Princeville today. It was great! The path was very good. It is mostly shaded. Excellent. We stopped in Wyoming on our way back for lunch. Ate at 111 Coffee Shop. Don’t be fooled, this is NOT just a coffee shop. The lunch was delicious. And it is decorated all with bikes! Perfect for us bikers. And check out the bathroom. Cute!!! Can’t wait to do more of the route from Princeville going south.

College/Huffine Trail

Nice Ride

July, 2020 by acewickwire

Location: Bozeman, MT
Trail Condition: Nice wide fairly new pavement.
Signage: Warning signs only.
Comments: Start at Montana State University and end on the edge of town. There is one major intersection that needs to be navigated. Nice for a bit of mileage, there are options for more miles by taking one of the intersecting bike paths. Pretty much a level ride.

Highland Boulevard Trail

Need A Hill Climb?

July, 2020 by acewickwire

Location: Bozeman, MT
Trail Condition: Nice wide fairly new pavement.
Signage: Warning signs only.
Comments: If starting from Main Street this is a climb to the finish but a nice downhill on the return. Check out trails in the nearby Lindley Park area. Can access them from this trail.

Gallagator Linear Trail

Best of Bozeman

July, 2020 by acewickwire

Location: Bozeman, MT
Trail Condition: Nice pavement first 0.4 mile from library and then good gravel/natural surface path to museum.
Signage: Good directional most of the trail.
Comments: This is a great trail starting from the library through a nice city park, then an art park area, into the trees and fields to the museum. Highly recommend. This and Story Mill Spur are the trails to do in Bozeman. Check out the trails in the adjacent parks. Bozeman has done a wonderful job.
