The San Francisco Bay Area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The trails in and around the city cater to runners, hikers, cyclists and nature lovers of all kinds. From coastal paths to urban greenways, the following trails provide some of the best experiences San Francisco has to offer.
Following the levees on both sides of Alameda Creek between the bay and the Niles Canyon, the trail is perfect for long bike rides, jogging, leisurely walks, or horseback riding. The southern section, favored by cyclists, is paved until you enter the intertidal zone where the surface transitions to gravel. The unpaved north side is recommended for equestrian users and dog walkers. The well-maintained trail provides plenty of opportunities for observing wildlife, especially bird species native to the area.
Winding through the heart of San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, this almost 4-mile path provides both a retreat from urban life and an important link in the city's growing bike network. The trail includes a 1.5-mile eastern section of JFK Drive, which has been closed to cars. The JFK Promenade provides the perfect opportunity to explore all this famous city park has to offer.
Running along the San Andreas Lake and the Crystal Springs Reservoirs, this trail is 15.3 miles of paved and unpaved paths. Currently in two separate segments, the trail follows a ridge along the San Francisco Peninsula between San Bruno and Woodside. The 9.8-mile northern section is mostly wide, paved, and reasonably graded—great for joggers, bicyclists, skaters, and wheelchair users. The southern 6.7-mile segment has a dirt surface and is reserved for walkers and horseback riders. The peaceful setting is perfect for those looking to spend time in nature without having to travel outside the city.
Located along the scenic Half Moon Bay coast, this 7.5-mile trail offers gorgeous ocean views, rugged cliffs, and sandy beaches. Relatively flat with a mix of surfaces, the trail also passes through a wildlife and bird habitat. The Half Moon Bay Coastside Trail is a great spot for hiking, biking, or simply enjoying a picnic with a view of the Pacific Ocean.
