Ankeny Rail Trail, which offers a short boardwalk in the Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge, is not a rail-to-trail project, but is instead named after a local bird, the Virginia Rail.
Located just south of Salem in western Oregon, the mile-long trail offers a scenic escape through wetlands and woodlands. Interpretive signs along the way tell you about the abundant wildlife. The trail ends at an observation point overlooking a pond, which provides a great place to watch for great blue herons, egrets, and other birds.
Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge is located at 2301 Wintel Road in Jefferson. The trail begins on the south side of Wintel Road, not far from the Wintel Road parking area.
this walk is awesome and a great view but it is a Wildlife Refuge so you would not take dogs on walks or runs here. highly recommend.
It wasn't until I got back from running this nice little trail that I saw the sign "no pets, no bikes, and no jogging" plus it isn't really much of a loop. I was hoping to run around it a couple times but saw the sign and stopped after 1 time through. Otherwise it's very well kept and beautiful scenery.
Not a pet friendly trail so if you are planning on taking your pet hiking with you do not go to this trail.
