The Cheat River Rail-Trail is a multi-use trail along the Cheat River in Preston County, WV. The three-mile trail runs between Preston and WV Route 7.
About the Route
The trail features both crushed limestone surfaces and a paved section next to Camp Dawson. Visitors can access the trail from dawn until dusk. Parking for the trail is located at the Cheat River Trailhead, which has picnic areas, water fountains, restrooms, and river access. Work is continuing on a 5.5-mile section south of the trailhead, including a 430-foot trestle bridge over Cheat River.
Trail History
This route was once used by the Morgantown & Kingwood Railroad (M&K), which ran from the Baltimore and Ohio junction in Morgantown to the B&O in Rowlesburg, Preston County, about 48 miles. The line primarily carried coal, building stone, glass, sand, and lumber. After the M&K was partially abandoned, this section continued to haul coal to and from the former cleaning plant in Albright, WV.
There is no designated parking along the route, but nearby parking may be available in Kingwood.
