The Hanson Trail is a paved, off-road alternative to State Route 9 in Forest City, Iowa. The trail parallels the road for its entire length through fertile farmland.
Forest City and the Winnebago County Conservation Board recommend using the trail as part of a longer loop by taking 205th Avenue/SR 332 south to 340th Street. At that point, trail users can access Pilot Knob State Park, which contains a bog, man-made lake, hiking trails, campsites and picnic shelters. There is also a tower located on Pilot Knob (the second highest point in Iowa), from which visitors can take in stunning views of the surrounding farmland.
Taking 340th Street west to Golf Course Road will lead you back to Forest City and complete the scenic loop.
Parking for the Hanson Trail can be found at Pilot Knob State Park off 340th Street.
Nice trail leading to Pilot Knob State Park entrance. A few conditions issues. but quite usable for many.
