Historic Railroad Bikeway and Pedestrian Walkway Description

This small central Arkansas community of Lonoke, east of Little Rock, has a history tied to railroading. The Historic Railroad Bikeway and Pedestrian Walkway is a just a small fraction of what was once the Memphis & Little Rock Railroad, later a part of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific system. It's a big mouthful of a name for such a short trail, but at just over 1 mile, the trail has no less its place in the state's history. The trail is an arrow-straight shot from town center to just east of town; it parallels I-70.

The first depot was built in 1867, the same year the town was surveyed and plotted. The depot now houses the chamber of commerce. The town also lies on the pathway of other historical trail systems that were significant during the Civil War as well as along the Trail of Tears, the forced movement of Native Americans, and the Southwest Trail, a main route linking the Mississippi River valley in the south and the Red River valley in Texas.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking is available at both endpoints: in town in a parking lot at Front Street (I-70) and Center Street or at the other end in a lot just south of I-70 by the baseball diamonds. You'll have to cross the road from here to access the trail.
