Overview
The Northport Rail Trail runs for 0.75 miles in the suburbs of Northport on Long Island, NY.
About the Route
The northern end of the Northport Rail Trail is located along Elwood Rd. where a small gap in the chain link fence marks the entrance. In the summer months, overgrown vegetation can obscure the opening, so trail users should look for a sign titled "Northport Rail Trail Park" to find their way.
The northernmost 0.5 miles of the trail is wooded and runs along a dirt and crushed stone track road.
After 0.5 miles, the trail meets a spur to Orchard Court that leads to parking. The trail here also begins to parallel Maplewood Dr. and is composed of asphalt, separated from the road by a small wooden fence. This portion runs for 0.2 miles until reaching the southern endpoint at Laurel Hill Rd.
Trail History
The Northport Rail Trail follows the right-of-way of a railroad spur that was constructed between Syosset and Northport in the 1860s. The railroad was eventually abandoned and made into a trail in 2008.
The Northport Rail Trail runs between Elwood Rd. (Northport) and Laurel Hill Rd. (Northport).
Parking is available off of Greenacre Lane where a spur leads to the main trail.
