Overview
While several trails crisscross Pinckney Island, a coastal island surrounded on all sides by salt marshes brimming with alligators and dolphins. But the easy, 3.5-mile one-way Main Trail runs across the whole island north/south and offers access to the best areas. Two-thirds of this island is salt marsh, but the area has a long history of human population. This trail offers no restrooms and is open dawn-dusk.
About the Route
Managed as a National Wildlife Refuge, Pinckney Island offers evidence of Native American settlements dating back 10,000 years in addition to early-18th century European settlements. Trail users will also be treated to notable plant and animal wildlife, especially in the spring, when wildflowers give the entire island a sweet fragrance and vibrant colors. Some notable wildlife include Raccoons, dolphins, and several rookeries for nearby wading birds.
The Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge Main Trail runs between a parking lot off of US 278 and Clubhouse Pond.
Parking is available at the southern end of the trail. Please see TrailLink Map for detailed directions.
