The ACE Greenway is a short but pleasant hidden gem of a rail-trail, located in the rural forests of Colleton County. Alternatively called the ACE Basin Greenway or just the ACE Trail, the unpaved crushed stone pathway follows the route of what was once the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad for almost three miles, linking the unincorporated communities of Green Pond and Ritter.
Keep your eyes peeled for a variety of birds along the tree-lined trail, as well as forest critters like deer, foxes, and any number of other wildlife who are drawn to the nearby Ashepoo River.
Future plans call for extending the trail another mile north to Ritter Road, but the ACE Greenway already offers a quiet and less-trafficked trail for those looking to escape into nature for a while.
Parking is available at the trailhead on the southern end of the trail, on Folly Creek Lane just west from Green Pond Highway/State Route-303, and easily accessible from the Charleston area via US-17.
