Schuylkill River Trail - Northern Berks County Description

Two small sections of the Schuylkill River Trail have been constructed in Ontelaunee Township immediately north and south of Leesport in southeastern Pennsylvania. Both portions of the trail have a crushed stone surface suitable for hiking and cycling. There is a small pocket park and ruins of an old canal lock off Washington Road on the southern segment, but few other amenities. However, there are a few notable historical sites, including the Leesport Lock House, nearby.

The southern section, completed in 2013, extends from Washington Road north along the Schuylkill River, passing beneath an abandoned bridge, before turning west and ending at Washington Street immediately south of Leesport.

A signed, on-street concurrency through the borough connects the southern portion to a portion of trail on the north side of town. Completed in 2014, this portion of trail begins at Canal Street and follows a remnant of an old canal, now just a dry ditch, north to Belleman's Church Road in Ontelaunee Township. This segment also closely parallels one of the two active rail lines that connect Reading and Hamburg.

These two segments will eventually aid in the expansion plans to bring the Schuylkill River Trail along the entire length of the Schuylkill River, more than 140 miles, from its confluence with the Delaware River to its headwaters in Schuylkill County. Visit the other Schuylkill River Trail segments on TrailLink here: Valley Forge to Philadelphia, the Thun Trail, the Phoenixville to Pottstown segment, Schuylkill Banks Boardwalk, and the Bartram Trail.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking is available off both Belleman's Church Road and Canal Street for the northern segment, and at Washington Road for the southern portion.
