Ship Creek Trail begins at the Alaska Railroad depot on the north side of Anchorage and travels east from downtown for 2.6 miles to end at Tyson Elementary School in the city's Mountain View neighborhood.
The paved trail follows its namesake creek for nearly its entire length, crossing it a few times. In the summer, salmon swim up the stream and you'll see anglers plying its waters. An impressive bridge also crosses over the ARRC tracks. Views along the way are mostly wooded on the trail's eastern end and industrial on the west side.
Future plans include the possibility of extending the trail west to meet up with the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, a scenic 11-mile rail-trail along the coastline of Knik Arm and Cook Inlet.
Parking is available at Ship Creek Overlook Park (302 E. Whitney Road).
A great ride from the Trailhead on W Whitney Rd to William Tyson Elementary School. The City Bike Map showed the trail continued up Richmond Ave to Meyers St, left for one block to a right on Peterkin Ave to N Lane St were I joined the trail along Mountain View Dr to the 3 choices of trails at Boniface Rd.24 Jun 2014
