The South River Greenway is a 2-mile multi-use trail along the South River through Waynesboro's Downtown corridor. Views along the way include those of the river, Blue Ridge Mountains, Constitution Park, North Park, South River Preserve, and the remnants of Waynesboro's industrial heritage. North Park has seasonal restroom facilities and there is a bike repair station located near Loth Springs Trailhead.
The South River Greenway can be accessed through a number of trailheads:
Loth Springs- 640 Arch Avenue (accessible, portable toilet)
South River Preserve- 101 Short Street (accessible, portable toilet)
Constitution Park/Arch Avenue Parking Lot- 207 West Main Street
Port Republic Neighborhood- corner of Abbe Place and Shiloh Avenue
North Park- 800 Bridge Avenue (accessible, bottle filler, seasonal restroom/ portable toilet)
Being a native plant enthusiast, walking this trail is disturbing to me because of all the invasive plants that edge the path. Instead of enjoying the greenery, I have to look away from it to have pleasure on this walk.
We have been on this trail too many times to count. Perfect for walking, jogging, scooting for kids, or a short bike ride. If you are biking, you can create a loop with the wide, lightly trafficked downtown roads of Waynesboro (we come back to the trail on Short street to avoid the main downtown road which is more narrow). There are benches, dog bag stations, and a newly installed bike repair station on this trail. I can’t wait until they finish the remaining phases and it is longer. Probably not worth a long drive (yet) but if you are in the area it is lovely. Stay in town and visit a brewery or local eatery downtown.
This trail is nice for a short walk. It will be much nicer once they complete the expansion phases.
Good trail, wish it was longer.
