Delta Heritage Trail State Park

Needs some more PR, an undiscovered gem

September, 2025 by robert.richter89

Arkansas has a great trail in the Delta Heritage Trail, it's just a shame that it seems no one is aware of it. I started my ride in Lexa and rode to Mellwood making for a 60 mile ride. As others have mentioned the first two miles from Lexa to the Barton visitors center is comprised of chunkier gravel. It is perfectly passable for a hybrid bike but really isn't worth the effort unless you are looking to start at the very end of the trail. The rest of my ride was on very smooth gravel which crossed multiple very quiet dirt roads. Be aware that the north part of the trail was not very shaded from about Lakeview to Mellwood.

This trail is very well funded and taken care of. The trailheads all had clean bathrooms and water fountains. It is a shame that I only met one other person for the vast majority of my 60 mile ride on Labor Day weekend. Arkansas and the Walton Foundation need to complete the gap in this trail and bring more awareness to it. This would drive much needed business to this area and turn it into a truly great trail.

Shelby Farms Greenline

Trail Extended East

September, 2025 by dblackmon4421_tl

A new mile and a quarter extension has been added to the trail with the
trailhead on Lenow Road. All Paved and crosses Macon Road three times. Beautiful trail making it more accessible to residents. They are currently redoing the mile markers. The parking lot could use some security cams as only moderate traffic passes by with no nearby residents. Cornfield on one side and The TVA on the other. I'm grateful to have it so close to my home.

Beware of those green poles

August, 2025 by baltz.dlg

Those green metal poles in the greenway that you would assume are solidly in place may not be...one was not secured into the ground and fell on to my son's foot and broke his toe.

Great connector from the heart of Memphis to the outskirts. Lots of trail spurs off of the main route once you get out east. With a little road riding easily connect to trails taking you in to AR.

Riverbluff Walkway

pretty good sketchy areas passed bass pro shop

Entered the trail on Beale Street. Pretty accessible and clean. They doing some repairs but not blocking the trail. Went over the big bridge across the Mississippi River into Arkansas side. Easy run on passing. The return over the bridge has a pretty nice incline great workout.

Wolf River Greenway

better suited for full suspension MTB

Trail is poorly maintained, narrow and probably best for walking not road biking. Trail is paved, but very rough in many spots. Completely void of directional signs, makes it difficult for first timers.

Delta Heritage Trail State Park

Great ride for hybrid bikes

May, 2023 by pasbuffy1

We had the wonderful experience of riding this rails to trails, 37 miles from Barton to Elaine, May, 2023. The bathrooms at the visitors center were clean and air conditioned. Great metal benches along the way. The water station, bathroom in Elaine was clean. We went to the Delta Hardware shop for cold drinks and treats, they were happy to see us. Where the trail is in the “flats” without trees, the chat was thick on the east side of the trail, beware.
Can’t wait for the completion and addition of rest stops.

What’s up with the electric non-pedal scooters ?

March, 2023 by hawkeye396

I’m starting to see quite a number of electric assisted bikes on the trail. The shame of that is a lot of the riders are inexperienced in handling the heavier bikes. They tend to ride faster without care of other riders. I saw someone on the trail today whose “scooter” was electric power with no pedals. It’s ruining the experience on the trail for the regular bikers. What a shame.

Make sure you have the right tires

February, 2023 by aeboe

We parked at the Delta Heritage Trail State Park on the very northern part of the trail. Excellent staff and facilities. However, we rode for 2 miles and turned around. We did not find it to be 'crushed' gravel but bigger rocks. Maybe the southern section is better. We prefer a smoother trail surface rather than looking down. We really wanted to like this trail but it wasn't for us. We headed 2 hours to Little Rock and rode the Arkansas River Trail instead.

Shelby Farms Greenline

awesome trail

September, 2022 by iverywood

Drove up from MS to ride the green line and greenway trails. They are both incredibly maintained. Friendly walkers, runners and other riders. Obviously, the locals have poured tons of money into the construction and ongoing maintenance on both of these trails. Several miles of connecting trails from both. Be sure to venture into Shelby farms for several more easy, beautiful miles. Best kept secret in Memphis.

Shelby Farms Greenline

an easy trail for a long flat run

August, 2022 by claire.louisa.knowles

Started and finished near the correctional facility, where there’s a little parking lot and easy access to the trail. Lots of fellow runners as well as walkers and cyclists. Quite noisy with traffic, but quietens down as you head east and move closer to Shelby Farms & gets a little noisy again when you head into Cordova. Very shady most of the way and a welcome water station near the crossing near the correctional facility.
