Pontchartrain Lakefront Trail

Great Trail

August, 2020 by danlortie

Probably the nicest trail in Metro NOLA but absolutely no shade anywhere along the way. Riding alongside lake Ponchatrain makes for a very scenic ride. A little tough in middle of summer, probably much nicer in the fall. Tammany Trace is probably better in summer because it’s mainly shady. Looking forward to riding when the weather gets cooler. Enjoy.

Mississippi River Trail (Louisiana)

Flat, paved, separated from traffic, scenic views

February, 2020 by jkhiser

We rode on 2/1/2020. Original plan was to start at Audubon Park, but was a big traffic backup heading that way. Turned around and parked at Jefferson Park and rode east toward Audubon Park. Plenty of parking on both sides of the road at Jefferson midmorning on cool Saturday.

Nice views over river, mostly flat, with occasional changes from top to bottom of the levee. Steady stream of walkers and bikers, but was not overly crowded. Occasional service road crossings, and one interesting spot were a small number of houses over the river share the bike path as their driveway.

There are many miles to the west that we did not explore due to the stiff wind. As a bonus, some nice restaurants nearby on Oak Street to refuel.

Perfect name

The park is too short is my only complaint😀. Fantastic views of the crescent on river. Great landscaping. Nice morning ride.

Rode this trail on a beautiful and warm (sunny, 75 degree F) day in late April 2018. I was staying on Canal Street for a conference, and grabbed a Blue Bike (NOLA's bikeshare system) right outside my hotel and rode through the French Quarter, connecting with the trail on St Louis Avenue at Basin Avenue. At a little over two miles, the trail is short - but it connects a decent network of bike lanes and bike sharrows on city streets, with the beautiful City Park. This is an urban trail - so don't think you'll be riding in the quiet country. However, the trail includes native flowers, parkland, recreation amenities (a neighborhood pool and playground) - and for most of its route it is a very relaxing place to ride. It also passes under an elevated section of Interstate 10. Along the route are several at-grade crossing with city streets. Most include push-button actuated flashing beacons. I found the drivers were very courteous, and quickly stopped to let me cross. The trail traverses neighborhoods that are strongly rebounding - lots of new residential construction. Shortly after crossing N Carollton Avenue, there is a new grocery store (Winn-Dixie) and shopping center immediately adjacent to the trail. Check it out!

Rode from the zoo to the spillway and back. Really nice ride with no stopping. Total of 54.2 miles round trip. There is good parking next to the zoo. There is a bathroom about 16 miles north from the start.

Great Ride

November, 2016 by crad94

In town for a bachelor party this weekend. While the crazies slept, I rode from Audubon Park to the end and back. Just under 52 miles...All the trail is paved and some recently updated... Solid trail to log some miles. The ride back sucked a little due to being into the wind, so keep that in mind!

Brought my Brompton on the train to New Orleans to ride the Tammany Trace Trail but did not expect to be able to ride to the French Quarter from Metairie Road on a newly paved beautifully landscaped trail to the heart of the city. A great start to being bike friendly!
