For a ride that showcases equal parts natural beauty and points of interest, start on Old Cutler Trail. This 13.5-mile asphalt and concrete trail, which was recently refurbished, starts at Old Cutler Road and Southwest 224th Street in Cutler Bay. Riders will travel through picturesque neighborhoods, under the cover of lush banyan and ficus trees. En route to the northern trailhead, at Old Cutler Road and Cocoplum Road in Coral Gables, you’ll have the chance to stop at many attractions. The Deering Estate at Cutler is a 444-acre environmental, archaeological and historical preserve on the National Register of Historic Places, located on Biscayne Bay. Nature lovers won’t want to miss Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, an 83-acre garden with extensive collections of rare tropical plants, founded in 1938, and Matheson Hammock Park, a 630-acre park with manmade atoll pool flushed naturally by the tide, a beach, a marina and a boat launch.
Next, you’ll be able to connect with the Commodore Trail, which has its southern endpoint on the other end of the roundabout from the Old Cutler Trail trailhead. The five-mile asphalt trail heads north through Miami’s oldest neighborhood, Coconut Grove. While the area is known as a trendy shopping and dining destination (you’ll find it all at at the CocoWalk complex), it’s also home to historical and natural treasures. Highlights include the bayfront Peacock Park, which is popular for kickball and softball teams, and the Barnacle Historic State Park, which was built in 1891 and houses the Barnacle House and the Boathouse. Do not miss the breathtaking Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, a 43-acre waterfront estate comprising a villa and gardens in the Italian Renaissance style as well as a historic village outbuildings compound. Built in the early 20th century, Vizcaya is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is a U.S. National Historic Landmark. The Commodore Trail ends at Brickell Avenue near the Brickell neighborhood of Miami.
Finally, if you still have some steam left, hop onto the Rickenbacker Trail at Alice Wainwright Park (located at Brickell Avenue at the Rickenbacker Causeway) for a ride over sparkling Biscayne Bay to the islands of Virginia Key and Key Biscayne. On this nearly nine-mile asphalt and concrete trail, you’ll cruise over the causeway, stopping first at Virginia Key, home to the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park (with hiking trails and a boardwalk) and the Miami Seaquarium (a 38-acre oceanarium with dolphins, killer whales and more). Keep pedaling to get to Key Biscayne, with Crandon Park on the island’s northern tip and Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on the southern tip. Both offer beaches, sightseeing and plenty of aquatic activities. You’ll have to go back the way you came to return to the mainland, but you’ll also enjoy panoramic views of the Miami skyline.
