North Atlantic Trails System Description

Just north of the small Iowa city of Atlantic, a sprawling network of concrete multi-use trails have been built, enabling cyclists and pedestrians to safely explore the lovely natural landscape around the lakes and creeks that feed into the Nishnabotna River watershed. The North Atlantic Trails System provides around five miles of pathway for residents and visitors to explore, looping through the Schildberg Recreation Area and out into land adjacent to the local little league baseball fields.

The western part of the trail system forms a circuit around the Schildberg Recreation Area, a popular local fishing spot that is home to a variety of wildlife and native grasses. After you've trekked around the lakes in the park, head east on a straight segment of trail that takes you over the Troublesome Creek (now rendered not-so-troublesome for trail users) and out towards the athletic fields. Another looping circuit of trails lies east of the baseball diamonds, traveling across the terrain along the waterway and through land used by the city's utility division.

Taken together, the trails of the North Atlantic Trails System provides an excellent amenity for recreation and exercise in the community. Those looking for a more linear trail experience should be sure to check out the nearby T-Bone Trail, a rail-trail whose southern end lies just a short drive up-river.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking and a portable toilet are available within the Schildberg Recreation Area, with lots located off of North Chestnut Street and off of Buck Creek Road. Additional parking is available at the little league fields, located at the intersection of Great River Road and Olive Street.
