The Appleway Trail provides an important transportation route across Spokane Valley and into neighboring Liberty Lake following a former Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad (aka Milwaukee Road) right-of-way. The first segment of the corridor was built in 2015, and today the paved pathway spans 5.8 miles. Loosely paralleling and located just south of Sprague Avenue, a major thoroughfare, the trail provides access to commercial areas, neighborhoods, schools, Spokane Valley City Hall, and more.
On its western end, the trail begins at South Farr Road and East Appleway Boulevard. (Although there’s no parking here, there are designated spaces for trail users 0.7 mile east, in the parking lot on the northeast corner of South University Road and East Appleway Boulevard.) As the trail closely follows East Appleway Boulevard through a suburban setting, it provides a useful commuter route but is not especially scenic in this section. Also be prepared for little shade along the trail.
At South University Road, East Appleway Boulevard ends. The trail continues on the east side of University, where you’ll find a trailside bathroom and drinking fountain, as well as a more parklike setting with trees occasionally lining the corridor. As the trail continues east, the surroundings become more residential.
In 2 miles, you’ll reach a trailhead parking lot, restrooms, and a drinking fountain at South Best Road and East Second Avenue. The next trailhead with these facilities appears in another 1.8 miles at South Tschirley Road and Sprague Avenue, after which the trail becomes more utilitarian again, closely following East Appleway Avenue until the trail ends in 1.3 miles at Ridgeline High School in Liberty Lake.
As of fall 2024, construction is underway to connect the trail to the Spokane Valley Library and adjacent Balfour Park (105 N. Balfour Road), located 0.2 miles north of the trail at its west end. Newly opened in 2024, the park includes a soccer field, an events plaza, restrooms, and parking.
Four blocks from the trail's western terminus on University Road, parking is available at Balfour Park (105 N. Balfour Road). You can reach the trail from the park by traveling along sidewalks.
Beautiful, no homeless, gang tags, excessive graffiti or garbage. Pure nature at its best!
