Nestled amidst the suburban landscape on the western outskirts of Dubuque, the Bergfeld Recreation Area is a 30-acre park with playgrounds, fishing spots on the Bergfeld Pond, and the Bergfeld Recreation Trail, almost two miles of paved asphalt trail that offers a great spot for walking or a short bike ride. A shorter walking trail also provides a loop around the pond, providing more opportunity for exercise or a chance to spot some wildlife and waterfowl.
The trail runs from the parking lot and play area off of Chavenelle Road east and north up to Pennsylvania Avenue, where another parking lot is conveniently located. Along the way, the trail offers glimpses of a branch of the Catfish Creek and provides a nice, mostly flat path through open fields that make the suburban industrial surroundings seem far removed. The city has plans to connect the trail with the Northwest Arterial Trail, which in turn connects to the longer Heritage Trail that runs into central Dubuque. For now, however, the Bergfeld Recreation Trail is a standalone path that provides a soothing dose of nature and quiet.
Parking is available at both ends of the trail, off of Chavenelle Road in the south and off of Pennsylvania Avenue in the north. The Bergfeld Recreation Area is accessible off of US Highway 20 by taking the highway to Seippel Road, then turning right onto Chavenelle Road; the park entrance will be on the right.
Very easy trail. I would walk it again.
