Though the plan for a trail along the former Boyne City, Gaylord & Alpena Railroad has existed since at least 2000, it took two decades to see the trail come to fruition. Thanks to the persistent citizen-led efforts, the Petoskey Area, home of the Little Traverse Wheelway, boasts an additional 6.3-miles of paved rail-trail. The Boyne Valley Trailway stretches between Boyne City and the Village Boyne Falls on the former railroad right-of-way that once connected the two communities. The trail begins on East Main Street in Boyne City near the Municipal Airport, about a mile from downtown. The trail then makes its way southeast in the railroad corridor. About 4.5 miles in, trail users will enter the Boyne Mountain Resort property and then curves around the Boyne Falls Airport to its endpoint at US131 and Cherry Hill Road.
The Boyne Valley Trailway offers a wooded excursion with some river views. The trail is open for non-motorized uses only.
