Although its current length is just over a mile, the small-but-mighty Chessie Trail will connect several parks in the northwestern Indiana city of La Porte. At its northern end, the paved pathway offers access to Kiwanis-Teledyne Park and Unity Park on the banks of Pine Lake and, on its way south to Newporte Landing, skirts Fox Memorial Park. Future plans call for the trail to also encircle Clear Lake.
The trail occupies the former right of way of the Chesapeake and Ohio (or Chessie) Railroad.
On its northern end, parking is available in Kiwanis-Teledyne Park (1126-1198 Pine Lake Ave., La Porte) and Unity Park. On its southern end, parking is available in Fox Memorial Park, which borders Truesdell Avenue along Clear Lake.
Brand new but covered in trash and somehow has potholes alredy.....
Nicely paved, short trail. There will soon be a “Chessie 2” they say. There’s a stopping point midway with benches to sit on. It goes through woods/wetlands areas so it’s incredibly buggy, no fault of the trail but be prepared
