This 3.6-mile trail is the first segment of the larger Eastern Shore Rail to Trail project to open to the public. Currenltly the trail connects Cape Charles and Cheriton, but the project will ultimately create 49 miles of biking and walking trail between Cape Charles and Hallwood.
About the Route
The Eastern Shore Rail Trail will span 49 miles along the former Bay Coast Railroad corridor, which halted operations in 2018. The Bay Coast Railroad once provided both transportation and shipping services and will now help connect communities within Northampton County. The 10-foot-wide asphalt trail currently heads south from Cape Charles towards Cheriton. The trail crosses Lankford Highway before continuing uninterrupted until Sunnyside Road.
The trail offers great views of the surrounding costal landscape, including salt marshes and farm fields.
A trailhead parking lot is available at Mason Avenue and Fig Street. In addition, a new parking lot has been constructed just north of Country Place.
