The Evans to Locks Multi-Use Trail invites residents of Evans to skate, bike or run all the way to the Savannah River. The paved trail parallels Evans to Locks Road between Evans Towne Center Park and the Savannah Rapids Park. The trail's journey is mostly leafy suburban with some commercial areas interspersed in-between. At the trail's east end awaits the Columbia County Visitors Center, the 33-acre Savannah Rapids Park and the headwaters of the historic Augusta Canal. Visitors can choose to explore the canal by renting a kayak or paddleboard, or remain on dry land and bike the Augusta Canal Trail south for eight miles.
The Evans to Locks Trail features some slopes that may be challenging for some riders, although it is generally downhill in the direction of the river. Water-filling stations have been provided in two locations to help keep users and their pets hydrated. The path features several road crossings so proceed with caution at these points.
Parking available at either end: Savannah Rapids Park (3300 Evans to Locks Rd, Martinez, GA) and Evans Towne Center Park (7016 Evans Town Center Blvd, Evans, GA). From the dog park, take Evans Town Center Blvd south to Evans to Locks Road, and then continue east on the trail.
Gave it 4 stars for being fairly well maintained and off the road in areas. This is a 4-6’ wide asphalt path combined with sidewalks on a fairly busy road. Yes it is safer than riding / running on side of road, but you still have to clear every intersection / business parking lots 3-4 ways before crossing….and there are a lot. If you want a scenic trail, this is not it. If you want a safe pathway to Savannah River Locks from Evans, this is a good alternative.
