Built alongside the busy Interstate-520 (known as the Palmetto Parkway along this stretch), North Augusta's Palmetto Parkway Bike Path offers a trail experience much more pleasant and scenic than its namesake suggests. While the trail does follow the route of the interstate and does require several local road crossings, much of the pathway is sheltered from the sight of the adjoining traffic by rows of trees and sculpted terrain - you won't exactly feel lost in nature, but you won't feel exposed to vehicles either.
The trail travels for almost five miles on the eastern outskirts of North Augusta and the community of Belvedere, passing over enough rolling hills to make sure that cyclists get in a workout. The southern end of the trail lies just under two miles from the start of the North Augusta Greeneway Trail, which allows ambitious trail users to create a rough loop throughout the entire area on the South Carolina side of the Savannah River.
Parking for the trail is located at the northern trailhead off of Ascauga Lake Road by the North Augusta DMV, a short distance north from I-520/Palmetto Parkway via Exit 22.
