This is an asphalt paved multi-use trail running south from Birchwood Loop Road in Chugiak, through Eagle River and past Fort Richardson until it ends by Boniface Parkway.
It is a mostly flat trail paralleling the Glenn Highway with scenic views of the Chugach Mountains to the east and of the water as it crosses Ship Creek. The trail passes a number of schools, sites of interest, and parks, including Beach Lake Park, Chugach State Park, Cottonwood Park, and the Alaska Native Heritage Center. Restrooms are available near the trail at Commons Park (12171 Regency Dr) in Eagle River. Used frequently by bikers, walkers and runners, this 17.5-mile long trail provides opportunities for both recreation and commuting.
Eventually, the trail will connect via additional Anchorage paths with the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail to the east and south. Other nearby trails include the Eagle River Road Multi-Use Path and the Ship Creek Trail. While passing through the Eagle River community, the Glenn Highway Trail connects with the Eagle River Road Multi-Use Path.
Parking is available at a number of locations along the trail. View the TrailLink map for all options and detailed directions. Parking locations include Davis Park (5081 Mountain View Dr, Anchorage), Louis Peña Field (8400 Starview Dr, Anchorage), Commons Park (12171 Regency Dr, Eagle River), and in the Bartlett High School parking lot (observe posted parking days/hours notices at the school).
Trail is basically on the right-of-way of Alaska 1, a four lane highway, so there is a lot of traffic noise. The views of the mountains alleviates the noise. The mile close to Anchorage is rough, but is smooth after Muldoon Road. No major road crossings. No water or toilets. There are toilets at Davis Park at the west end of the trail.
You can connect with Ship Creek Trail by a marked Bike Boulevard through a residential area about a mile long. Google maps does not show this route, but shows Mountain View Drive as bike friendly, which is a four lane street with no bike lanes, don't go that way.
Gave this route 3 stars due to lack of facilities and traffic noise.
